Blak Fig is a social enterprise training café set to open January 2025. It is an initiative created by First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing (FPHW) with the aim of improving the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal people across the Frankston, Mornington Peninsula region, by creating meaningful employment and training opportunities in a culturally safe environment.

Our Vision is to empower First Nations people by creating meaningful employment and training opportunities for Aboriginal people in a culturally safe environment. We will operate a welcoming, thriving café that serves great coffee and quality food sourced ethically and sustainably, and provide a space to showcase and sell products made by Aboriginal companies. We aim to build a social enterprise café that is financially sustainable, while valuing social impact over profits.

About the role

The Trainee Barista role at Blak Fig goes beyond coffee making. As a social enterprise led by First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing, the café creates a welcoming environment and quality service experience for the community, while promoting cultural awareness and inclusivity. This role offers hands-on training and mentoring in a culturally supportive space. You’ll also play a part in delivering excellent customer service and helping the café run smoothly.

About you

We are looking for a Trainee Barista who is not only passionate about coffee but also has a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a genuine passion. The ideal candidate is friendly, eager to grow, and ready to work as part of a team that has a desire to contribute to an organisation with a strong community and cultural focus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn to prepare and serve coffee and beverages following standard recipes.
  • Assist with preparing and presenting light snacks and baked goods.
  • Provide friendly and welcoming customer service.
  • Help maintain cleanliness and hygiene throughout the café.
  • Support team members with day-to-day tasks.
  • Assist in restocking café supplies.
  • Work collaboratively to provide a positive experience for all customers.
  • Uphold the vision of Blak Fig as a culturally safe and community- focused space.

What Would Be Great

  • An interest in working in a social enterprise or community-focused business.
  • Previous experience in hospitality or customer service.

What we offer

  • Blak Fig will support the successful applicant to complete a Certificate 3 in Hospitality.
  • Gain hands-on experience in a social enterprise environment.
  • Develop barista skills, including coffee preparation techniques and customer service excellence, with on-the-job training and mentoring.

  • Contribute to a welcoming and culturally safe space for the community.
  • Training and support to build knowledge and skills in customer service, coffee preparation, and teamwork.
