Family Planning Alliance Australia (FPAA) is a long-standing alliance of the key sexual and reproductive health organisations from each of the Australian states and territories and as the peak body, is their national policy and advocacy voice.

Vision – Optimal sexual and reproductive health and rights for everyone, everywhere.

Role – We are the national peak body driving action on sexual and reproductive health, rights and wellbeing.

We do this by:

  • Ensuring national investment in policy and system change
  • Connecting knowledge for clinical excellence and health education and promotion.

Our work cuts across 20+ national government strategies and policy frameworks in the portfolios of health, education, gendered violence, equity, e-safety, prevention of child sexual abuse and international development.

FPAA is the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) Australian country member. Through this network we are connected internationally with organisations of like mind to further sexual and reproductive health and rights for all.

THE ROLE

A newly created role, the Strategic Engagement and Communications Lead is responsible for leading FPAA’s national communications, marketing and strategic engagement, including the AUSLARC project, a collaboration with all eight Australian states and territory family planning organisations and RACGP.

The AUSLARC project is a 2.5-year national project funded by the Department of Health and Aged Care that aims to deliver Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) training scholarships for health professionals.

The AUSLARC project team will lead three project phases: co-design, implementation and evaluation. The project team will include communications and marketing, evaluation and key working groups with internal and external representatives.

The Strategic Engagement and Communications Lead will support this project as well as general FPAA activities with key stakeholders and the eight family planning organisations in each jurisdiction of Australia.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Digital and content creation and management
  • Social media management
  • Manage branding activities, including a rebrand in 2025
  • Media management in consultation with FPAA spokespeople
  • Campaign planning and execution
  • Contribute and/or prepare quality reports, briefing papers and correspondence
  • Communicate with and manage correspondence from key stakeholders
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders and working groups
  • Attend key stakeholder meetings, internal and external
  • Support the CEO with submissions, advocacy and policy
  • Contribute to strategic plan, narrative and positioning
  • Support with presentations, op eds and external communication activities
  • Undertake other relevant duties as directed

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • A commitment to the vision and values of FPAA
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in communications, marketing, campaigns and strategic engagement
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, written and oral communication skills including community education, consumer engagement, advocacy, partnership development and networking
  • Proven experience delivering health campaigns tailored to priority communities such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, LGBTIQA+, culturally diverse groups, rural and regional Australia.
  • Strong media relations skills with expertise in managing media interviews and maximising coverage, along with well-developed social media proficiency.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex information clearly to diverse audiences and build strategic relationships.
  • Proven planning, time management and organisational skills
  • Highly proficient IT skills, experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and confidence using cloud-based software
  • Highly organised, efficient and reliable with proven ability to handle multiple tasks at one time
  • Relevant knowledge of current reproductive and sexual health care
  • Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams remotely with minimal supervision.

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a related field e.g. communications, marketing, health promotion, public health or relevant field with at least 3 years’ experience working in communications, health and community services, not for profit or similar field.

Other requirements:

  • National Police Clearance - no older than 6 months from date of issue, or ability to obtain
  • You must have the right to live and work in Australia (VEVO checks will be conducted to confirm your eligibility to work in Australia).
  • Ability to travel regionally and interstate when required.
