About the Gap Youth and Community Centre

The Gap Youth and Community Centre Aboriginal Corporation (GYCC), a not-for-profit community-based organisation, has been providing assistance and support to at-risk children, young people, their families and their communities in Alice Springs since 1977. As a multi-service organisation funded by Territory and Federal government, Gap provides a range of support programs and activities to assist and empower young people to make positive choices and decisions for their future.

For over 43 years, the GYCC has been providing support and assistance to children and young people based on individual need including assistance with educational engagement, housing and homelessness, vocational training, employment assistance, crime prevention & intervention, information, referral, advocacy, practical assistance, drop-in, and recreational activities.

Program Description

The Youth Diversion Program works with children and young people aged 10 to 17 years of age who have been referred to the program by the Northern Territory Police Force or Court under the Youth Justice Act. The program also has capacity to support children at risk of contact with the Youth Justice system, who may have not had formal diversion involvement. The program is under pinned by a strengths-based, trauma informed approach and operates within a Restorative Justice framework.

Role Description

The Youth Diversion (YD) Case Manager will engage with, build rapport with and provide responsive, culturally sound case management and support to assist the young person to meet their obligations and to encourage better decision making. This will include facilitating relevant early intervention activities for young people at risk of entering the criminal justice system, adhering to best practice principles.

Responsibilities

Main Duties:

  • Provide culturally responsive case management to young people and their families.
  • Undertake assessments, maintain case files and prepare reports in relation to young people as required.
  • Engage in early intervention recreational and educational activities that are safe and culturally appropriate.
  • Work within the legislative framework to support the young person.
  • Facilitate therapeutic and educational sessions with young people that addresses criminogenic needs.
  • Work collaboratively within the team and with relevant community stakeholders to support appropriate referral pathways and through care.
  • Other duties, as required.

  • Work in accordance with the GYCC’s Health and Safety policies, the WHS Act, and Regulations.
  • Ensure reporting of WHS non-conformances or incidents/injuries

Selection Criteria

Essential

  1. Tertiary qualification in Youth Work, Social Work, Youth Justice or similar field, or able to demonstrate extensive prior experience in Youth Justice case management.
  2. Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable young people and an understanding of social justice issues that affect Indigenous communities.
  3. An understanding of the restorative process and a sound knowledge and experience using trauma informed care and strengths-based practices.
  4. Strong administrative and organisational skills including the ability to develop and implement case management plans, maintain accurate case notes and write case management reports.
  5. Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including a high level of written and oral communications, mediation and negotiation skills.
  6. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain complete confidentiality.
  7. Knowledge of the local community and ability to develop relationships across the sector and community.
  8. Hold a current C Class Driver’s licence, or the ability to obtain.
  9. Hold a First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain.

Desirable

  1. Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross cultural awareness and sensitivity in the workplace.
  2. Ability to speak a local Aboriginal language.

Employment with Gap is conditional on the employee providing:

  1. NT Working with Children Check (Ochre Card).
  2. Satisfactory Criminal History Check.
  3. Persons considered for a position with the GYCC may be required to undergo a pre-employment medical examination and drug screen to determine fitness to perform nominated duties.
  4. Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination.
