Board Director (Voluntary) - Remote / Work From Home

Green Music Australia

“When you’ve got art you’ve got voice. And when you’ve got voice you’ve got freedom, and with freedom comes responsibility."

—Richard Frankland, Gunditjmara filmmaker, musician and activist.

ABOUT US

Music is a powerful force, tapping into our emotions, changing the way we think and what we dare to imagine. Green Music Australia exists to harness this power to inspire deep social change. Everything we love is at risk. Music can unite us and together, we can bring this new verse into being.

WHAT IF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WENT GREEN?

What if every festival and venue in Australia banned single-use plastics, swapping out rubbish for reusables? What if artists wrote green anthems and used their platform to inspire a new generation of environmental champions? What if our music scene became a laboratory for earth-centred innovation, showcasing climate solutions and transforming what people believe is possible? Green Music Australia is turning this vision into a reality.

OUR IMPACT

In just ten years, we’ve helped over 40 festivals go plastic free, saving three million bottles and cups from landfill. Major artists like Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil), Jess Cerro (Montaigne) and Missy Higgins are patrons of our organisation and ambassadors for our work, greening their shows and speaking up on climate change. And we’re re-launching our No Music on a Dead Planet campaign to put climate at the centre of political policy. This is just the start!

THE ROLE

We are looking for two Directors to join our board and help expand our impact.

These vital roles will support the organisation’s growth, strengthen our operational capacity, and play an active role in strategic planning to make the music industry greener and cleaner. These are remote roles open to candidates from across Australia. As a Director, you will contribute to governance, provide strategic oversight, and support fundraising and advocacy efforts as needed.

Green Music Australia is a registered charity, and our volunteer board oversees the strategic direction and impact of the organisation.

We are specifically seeking individuals working in or adjacent to the music and/or environment sectors with expertise in:

  • Governance
  • HR / Administration
  • Commercial Partnerships & Strategy (fee-for-service)

This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with a dedicated team in the arts and environment sectors, driving meaningful and lasting change. Although we may not have met, we are pretty certain you’ll be:

  • Passionate about music and our planet – ever been spellbound watching a live musical performance or walking through an ancient forest? Us too!
  • Impact driven – enough talk, you want to see action. Australia’s music scene is unparalleled in its reach, drawing crowds of all ages from across the political spectrum.
  • Authentic – someone who is unashamedly themself and always up for helping others to be the same.
  • Up for a challenge – you’ll be joining a small but hugely devoted team of volunteer directors and staff.
  • Energised and committed – you’re probably busy but you’ll make the time needed to deliver results, and invite others along for the journey.

While not mandatory, our ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience on a not-for-profit board
  • Professional experience in leadership in the music industry, government, philanthropy or the not-for-profit sector
  • An understanding of and commitment to environmental issues and GMA’s approach to creating cultural change
  • Personal connections for support

The voices and perspectives of First Nations peoples and people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds are central to our decision making at Board level. If you identify as either of these groups, we encourage you to apply.

BOARD COMPOSITION, DUTIES & TIME COMMITMENT

  • The Board is currently comprised of seven (7) Directors, and must have at least four (4) Directors.
  • Directors are appointed for an initial three-year term, with the opportunity for reappointment.
  • There is one Finance and Fundraising sub-committee, which meets at least 2 times per year.
  • You can expect to spend 4 hours per month, which includes a one-hour board meeting at 4-5pm on the last Thursday of each month.
  • Occasionally, we may hold additional strategy or working group meetings.
