Jenny Leong MP, the Greens Member for Newtown, is recruiting for a Senior Electorate Officer to join her and the Newtown team.

We are looking for an experienced person who shares our commitment to empowering and supporting communities to achieve positive change. If you are a communications or campaigning professional, enjoy working in a fast-paced and people-focused environment, have good political judgement, experience managing projects and a passion to change the world then we hope you will apply to join us in our Newtown Electorate Office.

About Us

Our small, high intensity team is passionate, dedicated, and experienced. We are committed to building strong communities, serving the good people of the Newtown electorate as well as working collectively towards significant social and environmental change.

Sometimes we help people one-on-one to resolve a specific issue with public housing maintenance, at other times we are organising and participating in community actions with tens of thousands of people. We work across local matters, statewide portfolios and global issues - we are committed to collective action, community empowerment and contributing to the diversity of people who are engaged and connected to politics.

About the role

The Senior Electorate Officer is expected to provide advice and day-to-day support to the Member of Parliament in their role as well as having carriage of policy areas, local issues and managing communication and internal projects. Importantly, you will share our commitment to the principles of the Greens and left politics.

The Newtown Electorate Office has four full-time ongoing positions, two Electorate Officers, a Senior Electorate Officer and a Research Officer.

The Senior Electorate Officer is responsible for providing high level strategic and political advice to the Member for Newtown and assisting to manage the Electorate Office. The role is responsible for developing and implementing campaign and communication strategies, including managing local engagement, social media and traditional media. Working with the Electorate Officers, the Senior Electorate Officer is also [A4] responsible for handling local issues and portfolio work as well as providing constituent support, maintaining relationships with community groups and organisations, conducting research and preparing briefs, and staffing Jenny at events.

Knowledge of the Newtown electorate and/or in one or more of the following portfolio areas is beneficial: human rights, anti-discrimination, or industrial relations.

We actively encourage First Nations people, people of colour, and people from culturally diverse backgrounds who are interested in this position to put an application in, even if you don’t think you meet every single bit of the selection criteria. We are committed to addressing the lack of diversity in politics.

This position is a full-time role. The NSW Parliament requires all positions to be initially recruited for 6 months. The position is then converted to ongoing permanent employment, subject to satisfactory performance.

While this is a full time position, we are open to those interested in part-time job share arrangements also applying.
