Animal Ethics Committee Member / Lay Community Member - Category D (Voluntary)

Griffith University

The Griffith University Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) advises the University on ethical standards for animals used in research and teaching.

The AEC reviews all applications for research involving animals, with the aim of ensuring that the scientific use of animals is justified, provides for the welfare of those animals and incorporates the principles of Replacement, Reduction and Refinement. The Committee is dedicated to ensuring that all research meets the requirements of the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes 8th Edition (2013).

A Category D member is defined as: A person not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution and who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either in their employment or beyond their undergraduate education. Category D members should be viewed by the wider community as bringing a completely independent view to the AEC, and must not fit the requirements of any other category.

Lay members of AECs are selected to represent the interests of the general community and are independent of both the Institution and the scientific use of animals.

This is a volunteer position, however, provides an opportunity to gain insights and contribute to important research projects. Griffith University is committed to providing training opportunities to Committee members, and some travel expenses, conference attendance, and networking opportunities will be provided. Members must have good computer literacy, be able to read and access documents online, and be willing to raise questions and contribute their opinions during meetings. The Committee meets 10 times annually at venues at the Nathan and Gold Coast campuses, and/or by videoconference when required.
