We are seeking a passionate and dedicated group facilitator to join our team at Gunawirra. This role is responsible for delivering the Yarning Aboriginal Mothers Program (YAMP), a culturally safe initiative aimed at supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children from pregnancy through to preschool age. The facilitator will work closely with the team to foster supportive social relationships, strengthen cultural connections and empower women and children to exercise self-determination in a safe and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organise and facilitate up to two weekly YAMP groups, including managing referrals, coordinating transport, organising cultural activities and excursions, providing education and resources
  • Build strong relationships with participants, cultural advisors and community service providers
  • Provide individual support to clients
  • Work in partnership and maintain relationships with relevant community services and care providers, including Allied health services, Early Childhood Education, Cultural/Community Elders and others as required
  • Support families in engaging with their cultural heritage to foster healing connections to culture, community and land
  • Address social determinants that impact Aboriginal women and children, improving their social, emotional and wellbeing outcomes
  • Travel to remote and regional partner preschools and communities as required
  • Maintain accurate records, reports and evaluations of program activities
  • Promote a safe and inclusive environment for participants

About You

Essential Criteria:

  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
  • Strong understanding of Aboriginal cultures, history and community
  • Experience in community service, youth work, mentoring, or group facilitation
  • Ability and/or experience facilitating respectful and culturally safe access to services
  • Commitment to client safety and confidentiality, with knowledge of strengths-based and trauma-informed approaches to supporting clients
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Working With Children Check (WWCC), Police Check and current vaccinations (or willingness to obtain)
  • Current Driver’s License and ability to travel as required

Desirable Criteria:

  • Social work or community service experience is preferable but not required
  • Experience in developing and delivering culturally safe programs
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and strength-based approaches
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills, effective interpersonal skills and ability to manage significant workload
