ABOUT GUNDITJMARA ABORIGINAL COOPERATIVE

Incorporated in 1982, Gunditjmara Aboriginal Cooperative is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) that provides a range of holistic community health and social support programs, principally to the Aboriginal community and other residents in Warrnambool and outlying areas. 

We work in close partnership with local government, other health service providers including other Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations in the Western District of Victoria, liaising regularly on the provision of health service and social welfare and community support programs.

Overview of the position

The role of Team Leader, Family Safety & Strengthening Team is to provide day to day oversight, leadership, and mentoring to staff working within Family Violence and Family Service roles.

The role reports directly to the Manager, Family & Community Services.

The role is responsible for providing support and practise guidance to all staff within the team, ensuring that funding targets are met across all the programs and the required reporting is completed for each program to the relevant government and funding bodies. 

The Family Strengthening & Safety Team comprises of:

Holistic Family Violence Practitioners (Victim Survivor); Intensive Family Violence Practitioner (Perpetrator or Men's), The Orange Door roles: Aboriginal Practice Leader and Aboriginal Hub Practitioner and The Orange Door Strengthening Cultural Safety

Family Preservation/Reunification Intensive Family Services Practitioners

This team is likely to expand.

The Team Leader, Family Strengthening & Safety works alongside other Team Leaders and Managers within the organisation, and fosters wrap around service delivery. 

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee the delivery of high quality, efficient, and effective services that meets the needs of the community
  • Promote a work environment that focuses on cultural safety and cultural respect
  • Building capability of practitioners to deliver culturally competent responses to children and families, victim survivors and perpetrators, informed by client experience and in line with the Integrated Practice Framework and relevant legislative frameworks (including (including the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005 and Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005).
  • Providing practitioners with relevant information and access to systems to support safe and effective responses to Aboriginal children and families as part of an integrated practice approach.
  • Lead by example and uphold the vision, purpose, and values of the organisation when interacting with staff and undertaking the duties of the role
  • Be familiar with and comply with the desired frameworks, policies and procedures of the organisation and funding bodies
  • Support staff to record and submit DFFH and FSV reporting requirements in a timely manner
  • Provide regular supervision to staff and annual performance reviews for each staff member
  • Foster a workplace culture that is transparent and free from bullying and discrimination, and be proactive in addressing workplace bullying and discrimination  
  • Foster teamwork, innovative approaches, self-reflective practices, accountability, and integrity in day to day work

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Aptitude

  •  Understanding and commitment to Victorian Aboriginal culture and the concept and practice of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services
  • Thorough understanding and appropriate training in MARAM, and Nargneit Birrang.
  • Ability to work with Aboriginal organisations, communities and individuals in culturally appropriate ways
  • Demonstrated strong and effective leadership skills with a proven ability to mentor and support staff and provide feedback and performance management
  • An ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships, characterised by co-operation, trust and mutual respect
  • Well-developed written communication skills and intermediate level computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook etc. 
  • Time management skills, including ability to prioritise, manage multiple tasks, work to deadlines, manage interruptions and adapt to changing priorities
  • Extensive case management experience, practice frameworks and models relevant to working with vulnerable families
  • Knowledge of services and interventions that promote child health, safety and wellbeing, strengthen parenting capacity, improve family functioning and address underlying factors for vulnerable families
  • Possession of a minimum diploma level qualification in Community Services or other relevant qualifications
  • Ability to lead change management as required
