The Youth Counsellor sits within the Youth Services team and contributes to building resilience in young people aged 12 to 25 years. The Youth Counsellor plays a key role in ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of Hobsons Bay City Council’s generalist youth counselling service working within a team of professionals and at locations including a dedicated youth space, across local schools and other outreach settings.
What you’ll be working on
- Deliver counselling services and other appropriate mental health and wellbeing support and information to young people and families within Hobsons Bay, in both face-to-face and online formats, and others as they may emerge. This may include one-to-one counselling and/or some group work.
- Provide assessment (eligibility for service) and intake for confidential generalist counselling for young people aged 12-25 years across Hobsons Bay.
- Maintain accurate client case notes and case management records for services provided.
- Work in consultation with key stakeholders in the provision of group education/workshops for young people and their families where required.
- Ensure appropriate planning and ongoing evaluation of the counselling service and programs delivered.
What you need to succeed
- Knowledge and experience of a range of therapeutic counselling theories, techniques and practice.
- Understanding of policies, procedures and processes relating to the engagement and treatment of young people, their supports and of their legal context.
- Demonstrated ability to engage, communicate and negotiate effectively with young people and their supports and key stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to liaise effectively and confidently with a diverse range of people.
- An excellent understanding and application of legal responsibilities and obligations in a counselling and/or mental health wellbeing context.
- Ability to work independently as a team member and with colleagues at all levels of the organisation.
- Tertiary qualification in counselling, psychology, social science or a related discipline.
- Registration with a relevant body.
- Victorian Drivers Licence.
