The Helping Hand Project provides youth of refugee background with supportive Mentors, so that they can achieve their goals and dreams.
Mentors will be matched with participants aged between 15-25 based on their skills and shared interests. The Mentor meets with their Mentee on an ongoing basis, developing a relationship that supports and encourages the participant's transition and settlement into community.
Volunteers commit to a 12-month period, approximately 1-2 hours per week or fortnight, in order to allow time to build a strong relationship.
Usually they meet at a time that is convenient for both mentor and mentee. Mostly the young people we support are in the City of Moonee Valley, Brimbank and Maribyrnong.
We provide Mentors with training and support. Mentors have access to culturally sensitive training and regular monthly ongoing support.
Volunteers help with a broad range of supports, including homework, education pathways, improving English, connections to social and recreational networks, building confidence and skills development and navigating Australian systems.
