About the Organisation:

Hepatitis Australia, incorporated in 1997, is the national peak community organisation to progress national action on issues of importance to people impacted by viral hepatitis.

Hepatitis Australia is a small, non-government, not-for-profit and non-partisan community peak body. Its members are the eight State and Territory Hepatitis Organisations.

Hepatitis Australia’s vision is the elimination of viral hepatitis in Australia. Its ultimate goals are:

a. Expedite the elimination of viral hepatitis in Australia.

b. Minimise the transmission of viral hepatitis in Australia.

c. Maximise the health and social outcomes for people with viral hepatitis in Australia; and

d. Make an appropriate contribution to similar goals within the Asia/Pacific Region and globally.

About the Role:

The Independent Member of the Finance and Risk Committee plays an important role in guiding the Board in financial and compliance matters and decision making. As an independent member this role is key to enhancing the organisation’s financial planning and compliance, working alongside Board Directors and the CEO.

The successful candidate will be collaborative committee member with a high level of financial skills and experience. This is a Committee role only, you will not need to become a member of the Hepatitis Australia Board. Meetings are held mainly remotely so the position can be based anywhere.

Key Responsibilities:

As a member of the Finance and Risk Committee you will:

  • Review the annual audited financial reports and be involved in the review of external auditors
  • Review and provide guidance and insights into operating budgets, balance sheets, profit and loss statements and cashflows statements
  • Review and recommend processes for management and control of risk
  • Review and provide guidance on legal and regulatory compliance obligations

Skills, experience and qualities:

  • Excellent working knowledge of contemporary accounting practices, supported by relevant experience and/or relevant tertiary or less formal education.
  • Proven experience in committee participation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of not-for-profit organisations
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills with high attention to detail.
  • Availability to meet remotely up to 6 times each year for a period of 1-2 hours at a time within business hours.
  • Knowledge of, or the capacity to quickly acquire and apply knowledge of, viral hepatitis, and a commitment to Hepatitis Australia’s strategic agenda.
  • Experience of knowledge of community organisations and/or peak bodies.
