About Us

Newman Women’s Shelter (NWS) is a small Not-For-Profit community organisation based in Newman providing Family and Domestic Violence support and accommodation, Youth services and Emergency Relief Services for Newman, Nullagine, Marble Bar and surrounding Aboriginal communities in the East Pilbara region. 

Services include:

  • Family and Domestic Violence (FDV) support and advocacy, FDV 24hr accessible women and children shelter, FDV crisis accommodation and transitional housing 
  • Mobile Outreach Support Programs in the East Pilbara region
  • Emergency Relief Programs (Food in the Park Project, Financial assistance and material aid)
  • Youth Services (Martu Night Patrol, Safe Space, holiday program in Punmu Community)

About the role

The MOI Advocate is responsible for increasing the capacity of Newman Women’s Shelter (NWS) to support women and their children in Newman and surrounding Aboriginal communities in the East Pilbara region experiencing or at risk of family and domestic violence and associated homelessness. This role focuses on early intervention, crisis support, and ongoing case management to promote safety, stability, and long-term well-being.

  • Women and their children are safe and supported.
  • Women and children’s diverse needs are met.
  • Women and children receive tailored support to manage crisis situations, secure accommodation, and maintain long-term stability.

The role will achieve these outcomes through:

  • Community outreach and engagement to support women and children in their own homes or alternative safe settings.
  • Case management and safety planning to ensure immediate and long-term protection.
  • Collaboration with key agencies such as police, courts, child protection, and community organisations.
  • Providing ongoing support to women and children post-refuge to prevent re-entry into crisis.

Key accountabilities

Client Support & Case Management

  • Provide culturally appropriate, trauma-informed support to women and children experiencing or at risk of family and domestic violence (FDV).
  • Conduct risk assessments, develop and implement safety and support plans, and assist clients in stabilising complex needs.
  • Assist women in securing safe and stable housing, ensuring a smooth transition from crisis accommodation to independent living.
  • Provide ongoing case management and support to prevent re-entry into crisis.
  • Provide short-term counselling, emotional support, and psychosocial education to women and children affected by FDV, helping them process trauma and build resilience.

Community Outreach & Early Intervention

  • Engage with women and children in community and remote settings, including those still living with the perpetrator, to provide safety planning and support plans.
  • Conduct regular outreach trips to remote communities to deliver programs, provide direct support, and strengthen local service connections according to Outreach Community Trips Schedule.
  • ​Deliver early intervention initiatives, including community education and awareness programs, to prevent FDV and promote safety.
  • Provide emergency relief and crisis support to clients in urgent need.

Collaboration & Advocacy

  • Work closely with FDV Response Teams, police, courts, child protection agencies, and community organisations to coordinate services and advocate for client needs.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety plans in collaboration with formal and informal support networks.
  • Facilitate client access to essential services, including counselling, legal aid, financial support, and healthcare.
  • Network with other agencies to strengthen the Mobile Outreach Initiative's service impact.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records using SHIP TO SHORE/VALIDATA.
  • Complete and submit all required reports, case notes, and service activity documentation in a timely manner.
  • Follow all policies and procedures, report risks or concerns, and contribute to service development initiatives.
  • Uphold the Newman Women’s Shelter Code of Conduct and foster a supportive, cooperative team environment.
  • Attend training, debriefs, case conferences, and monthly supervision sessions to ensure best-practice service delivery.
  • Maintain the outreach vehicle, ensuring it is clean and operational for service delivery.

Selection Criteria

  • Understanding of domestic violence issues, particularly those affecting women and children, with familiarity in the relevant frameworks, practices, guiding principles, and legislation related to family and domestic violence (FDV).
  • Non-judgmental and flexible attitude, including excellent listening skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in culturally sensitive practices, with a deep understanding of Indigenous culture, community issues, and the ability to communicate effectively with Indigenous people.
  • Awareness and understanding of issues facing non-English speaking background people and the ability to communicate effectively with them.
  • Experience in case management.
  • Understanding of the principles of Community Development and the ability to implement relevant activities/programs.
  • High-level accountable and transparent communication skills (written and verbal), including maintaining statistics, writing reports, and facilitating meetings and group activities.
  • Excellent time management with the ability to manage competing demands within limited timeframes.
  • Must be physically fit and capable of performing physically demanding tasks as required.
  • Ability and willingness to work as part of a team approach.
  • Excellent negotiation and networking skills with the ability to network and liaise with local agencies and key stakeholders.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and adhere to privacy and confidentiality principles.

Relevant Experience, Qualifications and Training

  • Relevant qualifications in Community Services, Social Work, Counselling and/or minimum 5 years’ experience working in a community organisation.
  • Valid Working with Children Check Card
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid Police Check
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Food handling Certificate
  • Cultural Awareness Training or willingness to obtain
  • Experience in 4WD or willingness to obtain
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry.
