About Us

Newman Women’s Shelter (NWS) is a small Not-For-Profit community organisation based in Newman providing Family and Domestic Violence support and accommodation, Youth services and Emergency Relief Services for Newman, Nullagine, Marble Bar and surrounding Aboriginal communities in the East Pilbara region. 

Services include:

  • Family and Domestic Violence (FDV) support and advocacy, FDV 24hr accessible women and children shelter, FDV crisis accommodation and transitional housing 
  • Mobile Outreach Support Programs in the East Pilbara region 
  • Emergency Relief Programs (Food in the Park Project, Financial assistance and material aid)
  • Youth Services (Martu Night Patrol, Safe Space, holiday program in PunmuCommunity)

About the role

The Remote Communities Outreach Advocate provides crisis response and support services to women, children, and families experiencing family and domestic violence (FDV) in remote communities. This role focuses on immediate safety, advocacy, practical support, and referrals to essential services, ensuring a culturally safe, trauma-informed, and client-centred approach.

Through in-home, hands-on support, counselling, and advocacy, this position assists families in stabilising complex needs and accessing critical services such as health, housing, legal aid, education, and financial assistance. Additionally, the role supports community wellness, parenting education, and emergency response efforts to ensure long-term safety and stability.

Key accountabilities

Crisis Response & Client Support

  • Provide in-home, practical support to individuals and families in crisis.
  • Develop and implement safety plans to reduce FDV risk.
  • Offer counselling, emotional support, and advocacy for clients experiencing FDV.
  • Assist clients in accessing essential services (e.g., healthcare, housing, Centrelink, education, legal aid).
  • Support families with financial literacy, parenting education, and pathways to employment.
  • Provide mental health support, drug and alcohol counselling, and assistance with grief and loss.

Community Engagement & Outreach

  • Conduct regular outreach trips to Parnngurr, Punmu, Kunawarritiji, Marble Bar, Nullagine, Warralong and Jigalong to deliver programs and provide support to these communities and towns. 
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, organisations, and service providers.
  • Assist communities with evacuation planning, safe spaces, and emergency response strategies.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, organisations, and service providers in remote communities.

Program Coordination and delivery 

  • Support Remote Community Advocates to ensure service quality, adherence to best practices, and effective case management.
  • Assist in the development and coordination of program delivery and outreach trip schedules to maximise service reach and effectiveness.
  • Support Remote Community Advocates in complex cases, offering guidance and co-developing case management strategies.
  • Prepare and submit monthly program reports to management, ensuring compliance with funding agreement requirements.

Advocacy & Referral Services

  • Advocate for clients with government agencies, legal services, and housing providers.
  • Facilitate access to training, employment pathways, and long-term housing solutions.
  • Connect clients with culturally appropriate support services that align with their needs.

Compliance, Reporting & Administration

  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records.
  • Ensure timely reporting in line with funding and service requirements.
  • Adhere to all organisational policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and training sessions.

Selection Criteria

  • Respond effectively to urgent FDV cases, providing trauma-informed care, and support individuals in high-risk situations, demonstrating a non-judgmental, client-centred approach.
  • Work independently in remote and challenging environments, balancing casework, outreach, and reporting duties while working collaboratively within a team.
  • Understanding of the principles of Community Development and implement relevant activities and programs to support FDV prevention and response.
  • Understanding of domestic violence issues, particularly those affecting women and children, with familiarity in the relevant frameworks, practices, guiding principles, and legislation related to family and domestic violence (FDV).
  • Non-judgmental and flexible attitude, including excellent listening skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in culturally sensitive practices, with a deep understanding of Indigenous culture, community issues, and the ability to communicate effectively with Indigenous people.
  • Awareness and understanding of issues facing non-English speaking background people and the ability to communicate effectively with them.
  • Experience in case management.
  • High-level accountable and transparent communication skills (written and verbal), including maintaining statistics, writing reports, and facilitating meetings and group activities.
  • Excellent time management with the ability to manage competing demands within limited timeframes.
  • Must be physically fit and capable of performing physically demanding tasks as required.
  • Excellent negotiation and networking skills with the ability to network and liaise with local agencies and key stakeholders.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and adhere to privacy and confidentiality principles.

Relevant Experience, Qualifications and Training

  • Relevant qualifications in Community Services, Social Work and/or minimum 5 years’ experience working in a community organisation.
  • Valid Working with Children Check Card
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid Police Check
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Food handling Certificate
  • Cultural Awareness Training or willingness to obtain
  • Experience in 4WD or willingness to obtain
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry
