HOPE has been a community service in Western Australia for over a century, providing much needed support to people affected by alcohol and other drugs, mental ill-health, youth justice issues and socioeconomic disadvantage.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Residential Support Worker to join the Hope Springs team! The position is casual, working a variety of shifts which can include day and night shifts, weekdays and weekends.

About the Opportunity

The Residential Support Worker at Hope Springs works in a Therapeutic Community environment, involving themselves in scheduled program activities, participating as a role model and providing mentoring and support to help residents achieve their recovery and life goals.

Requirements of the Role:

  • Knowledge and promotion of the Therapeutic Community model of recovery for drug & alcohol residential treatment.
  • Application and maintenance of Therapeutic Community fundamentals:
    • Community as Method
    • Staged Approach
    • Holistic & Multidimensional approach
    • Encounter system
  • Knowledge and use of data gathering tools as well as assessment instruments
  • Ensure client records are updated and current, using the Client Management System and hardcopy client files where necessary.
  • Understanding Social Learning vs. Didactic learning (teacher-centred method of instruction in which teachers deliver and students receive lessons)
  • Maintaining accurate client records in various formats, including in the Client Management System
  • Understanding the relationship between Belonging and Individuality
  • Understanding and Discouraging the “We-They” Dichotomy

About you:

  • Knowledge, understanding and experience working in Therapeutic Community
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience using and promoting the ‘Community as Method’ philosophy in a TC context.
  • Commitment to upholding HOPE Community Services’ and Hope Springs vision, mission, and values.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate well with people across all levels in society.
  • Able to problem solve sensitive issues and manage difficult interpersonal disputes.
  • Ability to work well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
  • Ability and willingness to engage in outdoor work and recreational activities.
  • Ability to use a computer for reporting and record keeping.
  • Knowledge and understanding of co-occurring alcohol and other drugs / mental health problems and interventions to address them (or willingness to undertake training).
  • An understanding of and adherence to working within personal and professional boundaries

Desirable Criteria:

  • Current knowledge of and commitment to Equal Opportunity in all aspects of employment and service delivery.
  • Experience in delivery of services to clients with co-occurring alcohol and other drugs / mental health problems.
  • Experience working with people with challenging behaviours or willingness to undertake training.
  • Experience working in a Therapeutic Community.
  • Experience in working within a culturally secure framework.

Appointments will be subject to Australian residency/visa, satisfactory National Police check (within 3 months), Working With Children card, Current C or A class driver's license, First Aid Certificate, and suitable work referees.
