Position Overview

The core objective of the position is to provide the Union with industrial and policy support on matters related to the strategic objectives. This will include providing members and Union employees with industrial advice, managing industrial disputes, contributing to internal policy development, assist in enterprise bargaining, and participate in industrial/policy committees.

About the HSU SA/NT Branch

The Health Services Union South Australia/Northern Territory Branch (HSU SA/NT) is a specialist industry union representing workers in the health and community services sectors. HSU SA/NT members are employed at hundreds of worksites across both South Australia and the Northern Territory. These worksites include public and private hospitals, pathology laboratories and collection centres, private practices, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations. HSU members are allied health professionals, medical scientists, phlebotomists, medical couriers, Aboriginal health workers and clerical and administrative staff. HSU SA/NT is committed to advancing and protecting the wages, conditions, and workplace rights of members through campaigning, workplace activism and a focus on member recruitment and development.

Principal Duties

  • Provide written and verbal advice to members on a day-to-day basis;
  • Representing the Union in ongoing industrial matters, including individual member dispute, collective matters, award reviews and variations, and any other cases the Union may be pursuing;
  • Being responsible for the case management of industrial dispute and ensuring accurate record keeping is being adhered to;
  • Participate in enterprise bargaining negotiations and supporting the Union in reaching its strategic bargaining goals;
  • Representing members and the Union in collective and individual meetings with employers and peak bodies;
  • Preparing communication for members and workers in relation to the union’s industrial activities;
  • Attending workplace industrial forums / consultative committees;
  • Researching and writing submissions on legal, industrial and policy matters that affect the health and community services industry;
  • Attending to union governance matters, including rule changes and other registered organisations law matters as required by the Secretary;
  • Contribute to the development and advocacy on policy issues through engaging with key stakeholders to support the Union’s strategic objective;
  • Support the development of policy submissions and position statements that advance the Union’s strategic objectives and advocacy efforts;
  • Manage and mentor the Member Support Officer;
  • Identifying organising opportunities and assist the Organisers in advancing the Union’s strategic objectives.
  • Provide Training and Education to members, delegates and the organisation’s staff;
  • Contribute to planning and implement state-wide campaigns, including bargaining campaigns;
  • Undertaking other duties at the discretion of the Secretary.

These duties are intended to reflect, in general, the requirements of the role and should not be interpreted to be all inclusive.

Essential Requirements

  • Sound level of skill in the provision of advice on Industrial Relations issues (including workplace change and enterprise bargaining) to members and organisers.
  • Qualifications in Law or similar highly regarded and/or practical industrial relations experience.
  • Sound knowledge of the Industrial Relations Commission/s processes, practices and policies and the Industrial Relations system and current issues.
  • Deep understanding of health policy issues and ability to advocate on policy matters.
  • Ability to participate in the union’s political and social justice agenda.
  • Sound level of skill in negotiating within the Industrial Relations environment.
  • Sound level of knowledge of relevant employment legislation and relevant awards and agreements.
  • proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Adobe and related programs.
