ABOUT THE ROLE
Position: Community Development Worker, Neighbourhood Centre
Job Type: Part-time, 30 hours per week, days negotiable
Location: HUB Community Projects, 79 Poinsettia Street, Inala QLD 4077
Reporting to: Neighbourhood Centre Program Manager
Direct Reports: Neighbourhood Centre Program Volunteers
Duration: Permanent part time

POSITION SUMMARY
HUB Neighbourhood Centre Inala is a cornerstone of the community, providing place-based support services that foster social cohesion and inclusiveness. The Community Development Worker plays a vital role in driving community engagement with the Neighbourhood Centre with a focus on three key areas:
- Linking people to formal and informal support systems;
- Facilitating social connections;
- Integrating local community action initiatives to address the diverse needs of the local community.
This role would suit someone who enjoys building and maintaining relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders – including community members, HUB service users, volunteers and other community service providers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Promote Social Connections and Inclusion
- Ensure the Neighbourhood Centre provides a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
- Organise and facilitate community groups, gatherings, social events, and recreational activities to foster a sense of belonging and connection among community members, including maintaining a weekly program of HUB Neighbourhood Centre activities.
- Work with the Neighbourhood Centre Manager and volunteers to develop and implement new activities to meet community needs, including identifying and contributing to funding applications, volunteer recruitment and volunteer support, promotion and facilitation of activity.
- Develop and implement initiatives that facilitate social connections, celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, and address barriers to participation in community life.
- Ensure that volunteer and community initiatives align with the neighbourhood centre’s values of inclusion, respect, and collaboration.
- Maintain safe and clean community spaces for the delivery of community activities.
2. Link People with Formal and Informal Support
- Offer individualised support, guidance, and advocacy to community members facing social, economic, or personal challenges, empowering them to navigate systems and access available resources.
- Support community members to access key services that underpin their wellbeing, including form filling support and writing support letters regarding housing, immigration, domestic and family violence and others.
- Maintain balance between supporting individuals and creating community impact given limited resources.
3. Collaborate and Network
- Collaborate closely with other staff members, volunteers, and community organisations and groups to coordinate services, share resources, and maximise impact.
- Develop relationships with local service providers to improve HUB’s capacity to provide relevant referrals to community members.
- Participate in relevant community networks, meetings, or committees to stay informed about emerging issues, share best practices, and coordinate collective action efforts.
- Contribute to the recruitment, onboarding, training, and supervision of HUB Volunteers, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment that values their contributions, promotes active participation in decision-making and program development, and ensures their experience is rewarding while meaningfully aligned with HUB’s purpose. Recognise and celebrate their dedication and commitment to supporting the well-being of the community.
- Promote neighbourhood centre activities via relevant mediums, such as digital platforms, newsletters, and flyers to build community engagement.
- Contribute to data collection and reporting requirements to meet funding objectives and to advocate for further resources.
4. Integrate Local Community Action
- Collaborate with community members, local organisations, and stakeholders to identify pressing issues and develop collective strategies for addressing them.
- Support the implementation of grassroots initiatives and community-led projects aimed at enhancing neighbourhood well-being, sustainability, and resilience.
5. Organisation and Team Contributions

- Efficiently manage resources, including time, materials, and equipment, to optimise operational efficiency in a resource-constrained setting.
- Proactively manage own workload to meet established deadlines and support organisational flexibility by adapting to changing priorities, tasks, and requirements.
- Undertake other duties as reasonably directed by the Neighbourhood Centre Program Manager or Director.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Manual handling is an inherent physical requirement of working in this role, including tasks such as stacking chairs, moving tables, and taking out rubbish bins, which is required during activity setups and daily centre maintenance.
WORKING CONDITIONS & BENEFITS
- Centre based work from our location in Inala plus occasional travel to external meetings
- After hours/weekend work required very occasionally

- Involves working with people with complex social issues and may involve exposure to sensitive or distressing situations

SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in social work, community development, human services, or a related field, or equivalent work experience such as experience in community development or social services.
- Positive Notice Blue Card for Child Related Employment (or ability to obtain) as a condition of employment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and the ability to learn other digital tools as required.
- Have a current open driver’s license (Queensland or equivalent) and access to a reliable vehicle with comprehensive car insurance. The worker may be required to use their own vehicle for work purposes, with reimbursement provided for mileage accrued.
- Current First Aid and Mental Health First Aid qualifications, or willingness to obtain them.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated experience in community development, social services, or related fields, including organising community activities, developing initiatives, or engaging diverse populations to achieve positive outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience in managing, supporting, or coordinating volunteers to create an inclusive and empowering environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build rapport, communicate effectively, facilitate conversations, and establish trust with people from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Strong organisation and time-management skills, with experience in planning community activities, events or projects and balancing competing priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to foster inclusivity and diversity in community settings, including applying equity principles, implementing culturally safe practices, or collaborating with underrepresented groups.
- Knowledge of local resources, services, and systems relevant to community development and social support, with the ability to build partnerships and make appropriate referrals.
- Positive and flexible attitude, with adaptability to work effectively individually and as part of a collaborative team in a dynamic environment.
