Social Connectors (Voluntary) - Newcastle

Hunter Circles Incorporated

We're introducing an exciting new way to volunteer - the Social Connector role! We are on a mission to bridge the gap between people with intellectual disability and our amazing Hunter community.

We're looking for enthusiastic locals to become Social Connectors and help build a stronger, more inclusive Hunter community in a practical way. You'll develop new and rewarding relationships through shared interests and join a community of like-minded people who are passionate about social inclusion. We’ll support you with training, mentoring, and ongoing guidance.

A social connector is a voluntary role for a person committed to inclusive communities where everyone belongs. You will:

  • be matched with a person with disability in your community who is currently isolated who shared similar interests.
  • get to know the person and their current interests and connections.
  • support the person to be better connected to others with shared interests.
  • receive ongoing training and support.
  • join in social connector meet ups to share ideas and learnings.
  • be part of an evaluation of the project led by people with intellectual disability.

Our key selection criteria

  • A commitment to the rights and social/economic inclusion of people with disability
  • Strong communication and networking skills
  • A commitment to your local community with local knowledge and connections
  • Willingness to share your social networks
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to both work on your own but also get along well with others
  • A ‘can do’ approach – creativity and an ability to take initiative and leadership
  • Enthusiasm to work alongside a person with disability to move towards positive, socially inclusive outcomes.

Willingness to:

  • Complete training provided
  • Participate in monthly social connector meet ups
  • Take part in the evaluation
  • Receive feedback and follow direction of the Project Lead
  • Obtain a police and working with children check
  • Follow the policies and procedures related to the role - to keep everyone safe and supported.

Whether you have time for company and conversation, a skill or hobby to share, or simply want to enhance your own wellbeing, we’ll work together to make a positive difference in your life and the lives of others.

Extensive training and ongoing support will be provided by the Project Lead and Peer Trainers. You'll get tools to record info, training resources, and advice from experts in community development, circles of support, advocacy, accessibility and communication. Learn about barriers to inclusion, developing community connections, active support, communication strategies, supported decision making, advocacy tips and more!

Time required will vary - approximately 4-5 hours per week plus relevant training and collaboration.

If you believe in the power of relationships to drive social change, then let's get started. It could be as simple and as profound as opening yourself up to a relationship with someone. Get involved!

Together, we can build a community where everyone belongs.
