Communications Officer

Health Workers Union
  • Health Workers Union – Full-Time or 0.8 FTE (Flexible Work Options Available)
  • Location: Abbotsford, VIC
  • Salary: $70,000 – $90,000 + 11% Super (Based on Experience)
  • Leave: 5 Weeks Annual Leave

The Health Workers Union (HWU) is looking for a passionate, driven, and multi-skilled Communications Officer to join our team and help shape the future of union communications.

The HWU represents health workers across Victoria — from hospitals and aged care to disability and pathology. We advocate for fair pay, safe conditions, and respect at work — and strong communications are at the heart of how we win.

This role is a hands-on opportunity for a talented communicator with a broad skill set who wants to make their mark. We're after someone who is fast to learn, able to wear multiple hats, and ready to bring energy and creativity to a growing union. You’ll work closely with our Organising and Campaigns teams to engage members, build union power, and amplify workers' voices across the state.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage HWU’s communications channels, ensuring clear, consistent, and impactful messaging across all internal and external channels.
  • Produce high-quality visual and written content, including graphics, videos, photography, posters, and basic print material to support organising, recruitment, and campaigns.
  • Manage HWU’s social media presence, delivering regular, purpose-driven content across key platforms to grow reach, engagement, and visibility.
  • Coordinate direct member communications, including targeted email (Mailchimp) and SMS campaigns that keep members informed and mobilised.
  • Support union campaigns and strategy, working closely with the organising and campaigns team to align communications with broader goals and maximise member participation.
  • Stay across emerging trends and technologies, including the use of AI, to improve communication methods and ensure the Union remains forward-facing and innovative.

What We’re Looking For

We’re not looking for perfection - we’re looking for someone with the right attitude, drive, and hunger to grow. You’ll be a strong communicator, with excellent technical skills, who thrives in a fast-paced environment, can manage competing priorities, and wants to build a meaningful career in the union movement.

You should be:

  • Multi-skilled and adaptable, with the ability to quickly learn and apply new tools and techniques
  • Confident working independently while collaborating closely with a broader team
  • Passionate about workers’ rights, fairness, and the power of collective action
  • Excited about bringing fresh ideas to the table and putting your stamp on HWU’s communications

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Experience in a communications, digital media, or marketing role
  • Technical skills in graphic design (Adobe Suite and/or Canva), photography, and video editing
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) and content planning
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Alignment with union values and a desire to contribute to social justice

Desirable:

  • Experience with media handling or campaign strategy
  • Experience maintaining and updating digital content on organisational websites
  • Experience using Mailchimp or SMS broadcasting tools
  • Understanding of the Victorian healthcare or care workforce
  • Familiarity with AI tools or emerging communication platforms

What We Offer

  • Full-time role based in Abbotsford — or 0.8 FTE arrangement for the right candidate
  • Competitive salary between $70,000–$90,000, depending on experience
  • 5 weeks annual leave
  • Supportive, values-driven team committed to making change
  • Tools of trade provided, including access to design tools and campaign platforms
  • Real opportunity to shape the communications function and grow with the role
