The Health Workers Union is seeking to recruit a full-time Organiser to be a part of our Union’s dynamic team.

The Health Workers Union, based in Abbotsford, represents Victorian health workers such as hospital ward and administration clerks, storemen, kitchen, cleaning and domestic services staff, personal care workers, disability workers, pathology collectors, aged care workers, laboratory assistants, research staff and technicians from various disciplines.

The successful applicant will be required to be based in or near the Gippsland region, ideally on the fringe of the metropolitan Melbourne area (such as Pakenham, Narre Warren/Berwick, etc.). The organising areas will be in Mornington Peninsula, Gippsland, La Trobe Valley and the Eastern Districts and surrounding regions, on a scheduled rotation basis, according to the needs of the organisation. Traveling outside of this regional may occur.

Job description:

You will work in a team and report to the leadership of the Union, and undertake the following duties:

  • Recruit new members to the Union and meet monthly recruitment targets;
  • Hold regular meetings with members and delegates onsite;
  • Promote the Union and its services onsite;
  • Provide representation to members and resolve workplace issues with management;
  • Identifying and mentoring workplace leaders/activists and encouraging activism in their workplace/industry.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Commitment to Union Values: A passion for upholding union principles and advocating for workers’ rights.
  • Excellent Verbal Communication: Strong public speaking skills and the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Organisational Abilities: Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and maintain their own schedule.
  • Campaign Experience: Demonstrated experience in organising and working within teams to deliver campaign goals and meet data-driven key performance indicators.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Confidence in building and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships.
  • Union/Industrial Experience: Has experience working in a union or advocacy role and strong knowledge of the industrial relations system, including relevant legislation and Awards.

A successful candidate must:

  • Be computer literate, with proficiency in Office 365 and member database systems (CRM).
  • Hold a current driver's licence.
  • Have the capacity to meet the fit and proper person test for holding a Right of Entry permit.
  • Provide a current satisfactory National Police Check
  • Have the legal right to work in Australia.

The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to the Union movement and a capacity to handle a varied and demanding workload.

Salary is negotiable, depending on skills and experience. Tools of trade will be provided, including a fully maintained vehicle which can be used for personal purposes (limitations apply).

The position will be probationary for a period of 6 months. Performance will be reviewed every 3 months.
