The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to protect and assist people affected by conflict and violence and to promote the laws that protect victims of war. An independent, impartial and neutral organisation, the ICRC is based in Switzerland. It employs 20,000 people in 100 countries and is financed mainly by voluntary contributions from governments and national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The Mission in Canberra is seeking a Communications Officer to work with ICRC’s team to develop and implement the ICRC’s communications activities in Australia. This position is suited to someone in the early stages of their career who is looking for a long-term role with opportunities for growth and development.
Main responsibilities
- The Communications Officer develops a network within ICRC with communications and production staff both within the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. He/she coordinates his/her work with ICRC Headquarters Communications Department in Geneva.
- Responsible for drafting and pitching media communications materials (news releases, blog pieces and editorials)
- In coordination with the Mission’s Digital communications officer, assists with the Mission’s online presence and profile, which includes using social media to reach out to specific audiences of interest to the ICRC.
- Organises events and exhibitions and contributes to the organization of visits by ICRC personnel, in particular with regard to communications and promotional aspects.
- Participates in training of media professionals in Australia.
- Assists with the planning, preparation and execution of visits, meetings and other events hosted by the ICRC.
- Participates in the conception and production of communication and marketing material (banners, flyers, web articles, Q+As, video clips, podcasts, exhibitions) as needed by the Mission.
- Domestic and International travelling required for events and/or trainings opportunities.
You will have an understanding of the ICRC’s work and operations globally and understand and adhere to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
Skills and qualifications
- University degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as communications, journalism or international relations.
- Three years’ work experience in a relevant field
- Proven ability to develop and implement communication strategies
- Proven ability to deal with media and communications professionals
- Proven interest in humanitarian affairs
- Experience in development of and communication using audio / visual material
- Excellent networking, communication, analytical and reporting skills
- Excellent written, presentational, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organisational and computer skills
- Knowledge of and/or working experience with ICRC, Red Cross or Red Crescent organisations an advantage
- Valid driver’s license
Conditions
The position is full-time (100%) on a permanent contract based in Canberra. Estimated start date is Monday 3rd April 2023.
The starting salary is AUD 70,303 plus 11.5% super. The post is eligible for salary sacrificing. The ICRC offers an additional monthly contribution to your selected private health insurance.
