  • Salary: Range from $110,000 to $150,000 dependent on skills and experience

The Independent Education Union Victoria Tasmania represents over 20,000 members in non-government education in both states. The union is seeking applications from a legally qualified individual to join our industrial team.

You will be results-based and enthusiastic and looking for the opportunity to join a supportive organisation where you can improve members’ lives at work.

As an Industrial Officer you will work as part of the Member Services team, handling workplace issues as they arise across the membership. The role also includes preparing matters for various tribunals including the Fair Work Commission, VCAT and the Courts.

DUTIES

  • Representing and advising members in workplace issues and disputes, including teacher registration and child protection;
  • Providing industrial information and legal advice on workplace and industry-wide industrial matters to members and officers of the union;
  • Supporting enterprise bargaining, drafting and enforcement of Industrial Agreements;
  • Drafting and preparing applications and submissions to various industrial and professional tribunals on behalf of the union and its members;
  • Advocacy on behalf of the union and its members in various industrial and professional tribunals;
  • Undertaking legal research and assisting in the preparation of legal cases.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

The successful candidate will have:

  • A strong commitment to trade unionism and / or social justice;
  • A current legal practicing certificate or be capable of obtaining one immediately;
  • Be capable of obtaining a Right of Entry permit;
  • The ability to prepare and advocate a position formally at a tribunal, court, mediation or meeting and to brief counsel;
  • Experience in bargaining for industrial agreements;
  • Well-developed research, analytical, problem-solving skills;
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and the ability to develop strategic relationships;
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise and multi-task;
  • Experience in industrial relations or employment law;
  • Ability to provide written and verbal advice to members and officers of the union.

Advantageous

  • Knowledge of, and competence in, federal industrial law;
  • Prior experience working in a Union;
  • More than 2 years post admission experience in employment or industrial law.
