The Position
We’re looking for a community organiser to support our grassroots community group, Independent for Sturt, to find and support a community independent candidate to run in the seat of Sturt at the next Federal election to be held no later than 24 May 2025.
The Community Organiser will be responsible for building and mobilising a volunteer base in preparation for independent representation in Sturt. This role is critical for engaging with community members and activating the community to have their voices heard and represented by our endorsed candidate. Key responsibilities include identifying community groups and leaders and developing relationship with them, volunteer recruitment, training, and onboarding, as well as managing outreach efforts, such as door knocking, in targeted neighbourhoods.
Key responsibilities:
The appointed community organiser has a primary focus on recruiting, activating and up-skilling volunteers, which will include responsibilities such as:
Recruiting
- Develop relationship with key community groups on behalf of I4S
- Identify local community groups and cultural networks within the Sturt electorate and develop outreach plans to these groups.
- Meet with community leaders within the electorate to generate support and collaboration.
- Recruit volunteers and identify volunteer leaders - support development of self managed sub groups.
Activating
- Coordinate volunteers to do voter outreach such as door knocking, distributing flyers, phone-banking and street stalls enabling meaningful conversations with the Sturt communities.
- Mobilise volunteers to turn out to events and voter outreach activities.
- Assist with the management of the NationBuilder Customer Relationship Management (CRM).
Up-skilling
- Conduct training and workshops to build capacity and scalability of the volunteer base.
- Support volunteers and committee members to organise and deliver community events.
- Provide the Independent for Sturt committee with regular progress reports
- Meet with committees (Coms, Fundraising etc) to collaborate and support volunteer work.
Performance goals:
- 400 volunteers added to the Independent for Sturt Nationbuilder CRM
- 20 volunteer training workshops conducted to build capacity of the team
- 50 volunteers engaged in voter outreach on a weekly basis
- 5 meetings per week with community groups

Arrangements
- 4 days a week on a casual basis - renumeration depending on experience
- Up to 4 weeks in late November early December - reconvening in Mid Jan for 8-10 weeks.
