An exciting opportunity has become available in the Civil Law Division at Legal Aid WA for a Specified Calling Level 2 unrestricted solicitor to join the Work and Development Permit (WDP) Service team. It is a fixed term position to 30 June 2025 (with the possibility of extension).
The Work and Development Permit Scheme is a partnership between the Department of Justice, Legal Aid WA, and the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA. The Legal Aid WA Work and Development Permit Service contributes to the Scheme by assisting people struggling to pay their court fines and connecting them with services (sponsors) that provide approved programs or activities under the Scheme. Clients attending these approved programs or activities may be eligible to credit their engagement hours against their outstanding court fines.
You will provide legal advice and minor assistance to support clients to obtain Work and Development Permits as an alternative way to reduce their court fine debt. The role has a significant stakeholder engagement component, aimed at broadening the awareness of the Work and Development Permit Service throughout Western Australia. The ideal candidate will also provide day to day legal support to the paralegal and non-legal staff in the Work and Development Permit Service team.
In addition to the primary responsibilities of the role, there is a professional development opportunity, aimed at broadening your civil law knowledge and experience by providing legal advice and minor assistance to Civil Justice Practice clients one day per week.
If you have over two years post admission experience, are a strong team player and have a passion for helping vulnerable clients, then this position is for you.
We offer a strong team working environment, the satisfaction of adding value to the community, and a range of benefits in line with business requirements, which may include professional development opportunities, flexible working and leave arrangements and a range of health and wellbeing initiatives.
Legal Aid WA is a provider of customer centred services and fosters a culture of inclusion. We appreciate differing viewpoints and cultural diversity and value all perspectives as we strive for excellent customer service through process improvements and innovation.
