Youthlaw, a leading Melbourne based community legal centre for young people under 25, is seeking to appoint a CEO on a full time, or part time (0.8 minimum), permanent basis to oversee the delivery of free legal services to assist young people across Victoria and drive change through policy and advocacy initiatives. Youthlaw’s primary purpose is to ensure that young people have access to legal services, particularly to address systemic legal and social justice issues. This forms part of its vision of establishing a just and equitable society for, and shaped by, young people.

This is a high profile role requiring a capable CEO with a strong desire to make a positive and sustainable difference in the lives of young people across Victoria. Key responsibilities include:

  • Strategic leadership.
  • Operational excellence.
  • Stewardship.
  • Advocacy and representation.
  • Stakeholder engagement.
  • Staff engagement and maintaining organisational culture.
  • Board collaboration.

We are seeking a CEO with a passion to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable young people across Victoria. The CEO will be an innovator with strong leadership capability, an ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels, and a strong focus on working collaboratively.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience leading a team, including junior employees and senior managers.
  • Operational experience in the running or management of an organisation or program.
  • Financial knowledge and acumen to ensure financial sustainability of a non-profit organisation.
  • Experience obtaining and managing grant funding.
  • Experience advocating for a cause or organisation.
  • A knowledge of the general business of Youthlaw, the community legal or legal assistance sector, the youth sector and a commitment to Youthlaw’s vision and values.
  • Legal qualification, legal training and experience or relevant legal-adjunct experience with knowledge of legal issues relevant to young people.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and the demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated understanding of intersectionality principles and the ability to navigate issues with intersectional considerations in the workplace and broader community, including advocacy initiatives.

Youthlaw employees are required to maintain a Working With Children Check and must have the right to work in Australia.

Youthlaw is Victoria’s first community legal centre dedicated to young people, established in response to the 1995 Australian Law Reform Commission and the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s Inquiry into Children and the Legal Process. Youthlaw is an active member of the community legal and youth sector and plays a key role in founding advocacy initiatives to champion the rights of young people.
