The opportunity

Kickstart your career and gain invaluable experiences by joining the unique IPART Graduate Program. You will broaden your skills while solving diverse and emerging problems and improve outcomes for the people of NSW.

Over 18-months you will grow your professional knowledge and skills while working in a variety of teams and projects. A mentor will help you grow your career to its fullest potential while you learn from and work with our leading experts. After completing the program successfully, you will have an ongoing role at IPART.

You can help us solve difficult economic and regulatory problems, such as how to make childcare more accessible and affordable, how to pay for the services and infrastructure provided by councils and water utilities, how to make sure that drinking water and electricity infrastructure remains safe, and how to manage market-based programs that tackle climate change. You will be contributing to the important decision-making process through daily activities like analysing latest data, conducting research, engaging with our stakeholders, and evaluating policies. Our organisation is small enough that your voice will be heard by the senior executives and decision makers, and large enough that you will encounter a diverse range of topics and projects.

Our office is in Central Sydney. We also offer flexible working conditions and remote working options. IPART undertakes independent regulatory functions in the water, transport, local government and energy sectors in NSW. We also undertake reviews and investigations into a wide range of economic and policy issues.

We tackle a diverse range of projects which will enable you to develop your quantitative and qualitative skills such as analysis (research, data analytics, statistics, and modelling) and communication (written and verbal) and stakeholder engagement methods.

Some of our projects include:

  • Water pricing – setting prices for Sydney Water’s customers, balancing affordability for customers with the need to provide sufficient income for Sydney Water to deliver its services.
  • Independent market monitor for the early childhood education and care sector – assessing areas where there are childcare supply shortages or higher barriers to parents or carers participating in work because of the affordability or accessibility of childcare.
  • Biodiversity credits monitoring - identifying how the NSW Biodiversity Credits market can more efficiently and effectively offset unavoidable biodiversity impacts from development.
  • Solar feed-in tariff benchmarks – forecasting the value of excess solar energy that households generate and feed into the grid.
  • Pricing taxi services - Recommending maximum fares for rank and hail taxi services, taking into account the advent of rideshare services and new taxi licencing arrangements
  • Regulation of public and private water utilities and energy networks – administering operating licences and conducting audits to ensure compliance with licence conditions.
  • Council rates - Determining the maximum increase in revenue that local councils can collect from rates each year
  • NSW Energy Security Safeguard schemes – Regulating, administering and advising on markets for emissions reductions, to make energy in NSW more affordable, sustainable, and reliable.

About you

IPART Graduate Analysts are agile and enthusiastic team-players who enjoy problem solving. They are goal-oriented and want to excel.

As an IPART Graduate Analyst, you have a willingness to develop your professional capability, work collaboratively and build a diverse skill set to prepare for a successful career at IPART or in the NSW public sector more generally.

You have a passion for driving better outcomes for the people of NSW and contributing your analytical skills to inform decision making on important issues.

You have completed or will complete an undergraduate or postgraduate degree within 2 years before starting work in February 2025. You will ideally have a specialty in Economics, Commerce, Engineering, Science, Data Science and Analytics, Law, Energy, Public Policy, Compliance, Communications or Sustainability. But graduates in related fields are encouraged to apply.

You must be available to commence employment at the start of the Graduate Program in February 2025.
