Who is Jawun?

Jawun is a not-for-profit organisation that leverages the capabilities of corporate, government and philanthropic Australia to support Indigenous-led development. Guided by the strategies of Indigenous leaders and organisations, Jawun works to build the capacity of Indigenous organisations to drive positive social impact at community-level.

Jawun began facilitating partnerships between corporate and Indigenous Australia in Cape York in 2001.

The Jawun model is transferable and today we work with remote communities in Cape York Peninsula (QLD), the Pilbara, East and West Kimberley (WA), Central Australia (NT, WA, SA) and Northeast Arnhem Land (NT), regional communities of Goulburn-Murray (VIC), Central Coast (NSW) Lower River Murray (LRM) and Far West Coast (FWC), the urban communities of Inner Sydney (NSW) and South West Australia (WA).

About the role

Reporting to the CEO, this role is part of Jawun’s leadership team and is instrumental in managing the financial performance and risk management (2nd line) of the organisation. This role also has accountability for our technology function, managing our outsourced provider, and provides internal audit guidance to ensure the ongoing sustainability and improvement of business processes.

You will influence at all levels of our business. You will enjoy being both “hands on”, and setting strategy. With the support of a small team, you will ensure an efficient and effective financial, risk (including WHS) and technology function.

Responsibilities include:

Provide finance expertise to Jawun

  • Prepare annual budget, forecasts, variances with insights and recommendations
  • Prepare external reporting including annual audit and finalisation of audited financial statements for lodgements with ACNC
  • Provide guidance on internal audit and quality control on business processes
  • Provide sound risk management guidance in both strategic and WHS risk management
  • Present to the Board and ensure they are engaged appropriately on finance and risk matters
  • Coach and lead your team with empathy and enthusiasm.

Our successful candidate will:

  • be an experienced Finance Manager who has been a senior finance business partner in a large organisation or run the finance function in a smaller organisation
  • CA/CPA qualified
  • have extensive accounting / finance expertise including reporting, budgets, modelling
  • understand risk management fundamentals including WHS as well as internal audit
  • have experience managing outsourced service providers
  • be an enthusiastic and experienced people leader
  • understand how to influence change
  • be confident to call out risks and effectively raise uncomfortable truths when required
  • have excellent communication and presentation skills
  • connect personally with Jawun’s purpose
  • An advantage: experience in a non-profit environment would help the successful candidate get up to speed quickly.
