  • Salary: $121,389 - $130,392 plus superannuation

Are you looking for a challenging role working to uphold human rights and create lasting change? If so, we have two positions on offer and look forward to receiving your application!

The ACT Public Advocate (who is also the Children and Young People Commissioner) is seeking two passionate, highly organised, and motivated Senior Advocates to support her in exercising her statutory oversight functions, which protect and promote the rights, safety, and wellbeing of Canberran’s experiencing vulnerability.

Senior Advocates are responsible for leading small, specialised teams undertaking individual and systemic advocacy, oversight of service systems, systemic reform processes and projects.

There is currently one permanent vacancy, as well as a new and exciting temporary opportunity (6 months with the possibility of extension or permanence).

The temporary role will lead a pilot program, in conjunction with ACT Courts, that has both a direct service delivery component as well as a research/project component to inform future advocacy for vulnerable people involved with the legal system.

The successful applicants will apply their excellent organisational, human services, and/or legal skills to effectively triage and respond to a wide range of information received by the Public Advocate.

These roles perfectly blend leadership, direct client engagement, and systemic reform opportunities to make positive and lasting change across a range of services including mental health, disability, and personal/family/workplace violence.

The ACT Human Rights Commission values its diverse work team. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, culturally diverse people and those who identify as LGBTIQ are strongly encouraged to apply.

Eligibility/Other requirements:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as Social Work, Psychology, Law, Mental Health, Child Protection, etc. are highly desirable.
  • This position does not require a pre-employment medical.
  • Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP): Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.

Notes: There is currently one permanent vacancy and a temporary position available for six months with the possibility of extension and/or permanency. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.
