ESNLC is seeking a qualified and experienced Creative Writing Tutor to deliver our Thursday afternoon Creative Writing program which is part of our Roomers project. These classes are attended by students with lived experience of insecure housing and/or social or financial disadvantage.

The class runs for 2.2 hours, starting at 1:30 PM, with an additional 1 hour per week for administration, planning, and consultation. All teaching and administrative hours will be completed at our Centre, located in leafy Elwood.

This is a 15-week sessional position, starting in March, with the possibility of further sessional engagement.

ESNLC is a not-for-profit, Neighbourhood House that provides low-cost education programs and hosts a variety of community and commercial activities that promote sustainability, wellbeing and creativity. Our programs aim to cater to the needs of our local community, ensuring those most disadvantaged are supported and empowered to overcome educational gaps and social isolation.

We are a Registered Australian Charity and a Learn Local provider that offers government funded and low-cost places in pre-accredited and general courses focusing on literacy, English as an additional language and computer skills. We have been providing quality adult education programs and a great breadth of community services to our local community for over 40 years.

About the Role:

The Creative Writing Tutor (Adult Community and Further Education (ACFE) Tutor) will deliver quality pre-accredited creative writing classes which adhere to the ACFE Pre-Accredited Quality Framework (PQF).

Prepared with a strong knowledge of their content areas and strong pedagogy strategies, the ACFE Tutor will demonstrate initiative, and create learning environments that engage and motivate adult learners. By improving adult learner’s engagement with education, the ACFE Tutor will support students and strengthen pathways to employment or further education.

The ACFE Tutor may be required to perform some regular administration and consultation, in association with each contact hour of delivery. As well as class delivery, the Tutor is also required to submit a timesheet to the bookkeeper, every fortnight by the due date, and complete a range of set administrative tasks to meet funding, audits and any other necessary compliance requirements.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Experience teaching multi-level classes with people from diverse backgrounds and complex needs, and the ability to apply appropriate teaching strategies to meet their learning needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, deliver, evaluate and moderate adult education classes.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate ideas through a range of methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a warm, positive, welcoming & respectful classroom environment.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Mandatory

  • Relevant teaching qualifications and/or experience demonstrating competency in skills and knowledge within field of expertise to be taught
  • Experience teaching a flexible and inclusive curriculum that meets a range of student learning styles and needs
  • Basic IT Skills including Zoom
  • Working With Children Check (Employee)
  • National Police Check

Highly Desirable

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE) or equivalent
  • A good understanding of Neighbourhood Houses/Community Centres and the Not-for-Profit sector
