The Role: Heath , Safety & Environment (HSE) Manager

We’re looking for a skilled and proactive Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Manager to lead our safety, wellbeing, and environmental initiatives as we scale our R&D and prepare for the launch of our new development facility in early 2026.

This is a dynamic, hands-on role perfect for someone with a strong background in chemical manufacturing, ISO standards, and deep tech environments.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead HSE Strategy: Partner with the COO to design and implement robust HSE policies and procedures.
  • Build Safety Culture: Foster a zero-harm mindset across labs and engineering teams, and ensure incidents are properly reported and investigated.
  • Design & Deliver Training: Create and roll out safety training tailored to the needs of our growing operations.
  • Maintain Compliance: Ensure regulatory compliance across emergency preparedness, hazard identification, and first aid.
  • Rehabilitation & RTW: Oversee return-to-work plans that support wellbeing and recovery.
  • ISO & Certification Management: Lead ISO 14001 (environmental) and ISO 45001 (safety) certification efforts, including audits and corrective actions.
  • Environmental Reporting: Support carbon reporting and sustainability communications.
  • Software Implementation: Roll out and optimise new HSE systems in collaboration with the COO.

You're an experienced HSE leader with industry knowledge and a collaborative mindset. You thrive in fast-paced environments and are committed to safety, sustainability, and innovation.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Applicants must have unrestricted rights to work in Australia.
  • Tertiary qualification in OHS or related field.
  • 3+ years in HSE leadership in manufacturing, laboratory, or chemical/R&D settings.
  • Hands-on experience with ISO systems and continuous improvement.
  • Experience working under chemical fume hoods or in deep tech labs.

Key Skills & Capabilities

  • Clear communicator and confident mentor.
  • Strong in developing and executing HSE training programs.
  • Skilled in LEAN manufacturing and MS Office.
  • Experience managing return-to-work and injury rehabilitation processes.

Technical Knowledge Areas

  • Federal/State safety and environmental regulations, incl. hazardous materials and dangerous goods.
  • Risk management frameworks and EHS systems.
  • Waste handling and disposal, including chemical safety.

Preferred Experience

  • Built HSE functions for emerging or deep tech (e.g. ammonia, hydrogen, battery, or fertiliser industries).
  • Background in chemical or advanced manufacturing.
  • Exposure to safety-focused design reviews (PHA, HAZID, HAZOP).
  • Managed budgets and schedules.
  • Worked with external stakeholders including regulators.
  • Led HSE training strategy and compliance tracking.
  • Curious, adaptable, and able to learn technical content on the fly.

Job Details:

  • Position: Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Manager
  • Reports to: Chief Operations Officer
  • Location: This is a hybrid role. Our onsite location is Clayton, Victoria
  • Work Hours: Part Time. This role offers part-time hours, ranging from 0.5 to 0.8 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE), allowing for a schedule that accommodates both your needs and business requirements. The final salary will be pro rata, based on agreed working hours.
  • Salary: We offer a salary benchmarked to market standards starting at $125,000 to $135,000 +* on a full time basis (plus super) - *Actual base salary determined based on qualifications, skills, and experience.
