Ranger / Community Field Coordinator - Remote Martu Communities / Newman

Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa

Job description

  • Location: Martu community (Parnngurr, Punmu or Kunawarritji)
  • Organisation: Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ)
  • Term of Employment: Permanent full-time position

KJ is an innovative and award-winning Martu organisation that operates a variety of land management, cultural and social programs based out of Newman in Western Australia.

We are guided by Martu elders, who are some of the last Pujiman (desert-born people) in Australia with deep cultural and ecological knowledge. Martu are the traditional owners of a large tract of country spanning across three deserts and home to wild populations of some of Australia’s iconic fauna species.

At KJ, we value individuals who are determined to make a difference, willing to work hard, enjoy working within a team and want to work in partnership with Martu as they realise their aspirations to look after Country, families and communities.

We are looking for new ranger coordinators to join and work with one of our men’s ranger teams. If you are interested in working with Martu rangers to look after country and culture and you enjoy working outdoors in remote locations, this may be the job for you.

What you’ll be doing

As a ranger coordinator, you will work with a team of largely male Martu rangers to achieve their aspiration of getting back to and looking after country, passing on knowledge and culture to younger generations, and making Martu communities sustainable for the long term. Your work will include:

  • Engaging and motivating the ranger team and ensuring that the program is vibrant and relevant to Martu priorities.
  • Taking an active community development approach in the planning and implementation of land management activities incorporating Martu traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary natural resource management (NRM) practice, cultural knowledge and other activities on-country and in the community.
  • Enabling on-country work involving both day trips and extended multi-night trips.
  • Providing leadership, mentoring and support for the Martu ranger team and broader Martu workforce seeking opportunities within the ranger program.

Does this sound like you?

  • You are willing and committed to understanding Martu culture, aspirations, and values.
  • You can operate calmly in a cross-cultural environment where communication, understanding and life situations may be challenging.
  • You are capable of transferring skills to new working environments.
  • You have high standards in all your work and seek to develop your skills and the skills of people you work with.
  • You are innovative and a problem solver, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • You are tolerant of ambiguity and able to respond positively to changing circumstances.
  • You are willing to live and work for extended periods in a remote community and undertake fieldwork in remote, arid areas.
  • You have the capacity to learn from your successes as well as failures.

Physical Requirements

This is a physically demanding role and not for the faint-hearted. It will require loading and unloading gear for extended trips on country, changing tyres, short hikes and weather extremes.

We want to make sure that you will be up for the demands of the job so you will be required to undergo a medical examination before employment.

Certificates

As the successful candidate will be working with families and across vulnerable communities, so evidence of a current Western Australian Working With Children Check (WWCC) and National Police clearance will be required within 3 months of appointment.

What we offer

A unique opportunity to work in a cross-cultural environment with Martu people on Country.
In addition to a competitive salary, we will cover the costs of your housing and utilities, provide you with tax-free salary packaging benefits, generous annual leave, flight benefits to Perth and access to professional development and in-house training.

Early applications are highly encouraged; we reserve the right to close applications early if a suitable applicant is found before the closing date.
