The Role
As Financial Counsellor, you will provide high-quality financial counselling services to clients, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, experiencing financial hardship. You also have the opportunity to experience the wider East Kimberley area through outreach activities.
Responsibilities
- Provide financial counselling services – including advice, assistance and representation – to clients as part of an integrated, holistic and client-focused service, from KCLS offices and remote outreach locations.
- Refer clients internally and to other relevant services and community resources, based on a sound knowledge of and relationships with other service providers and governments.
- Work with other staff to identify gaps, priorities and emerging needs in community financial information and education, and co-deliver programs and initiatives which respond to those needs.
- Participate in interagency networks and build/maintain relationships with referring agencies, key organisations, community leaders and local people relevant to the area.
- Work with other financial counselling services across the Kimberley (and statewide) to strengthen our regional community of practice for financial counselling.
- Assist in the preparation of reports to funding agencies by maintaining statistics and other records as required.
We are searching for those who can meet most of the following selection criteria:
- Eligibility to work as a qualified financial counsellor in Western Australia.
- Experience in financial advice, financial counselling, and/or areas relevant to the issues faced by KCLS's client communities.
- Critical interpersonal communication skills, including communicating with clients with empathy and reflecting on practice.
- Critical written skills, including the ability to write financial concepts in plain language.
- Sound organisational skills and ability to manage workload, competing demands, meet deadlines and to work effectively as part of a team.
- Understanding and commitment to principles of social justice and to working effectively with Indigenous people.
- Experience in advising and representing people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and in developing and delivering community education programs.
- Personal resilience, adaptability and ability to meet the challenges of remote service delivery.
- Current driver’s licence valid for use in WA.
Further desirable criteria:
- Experience in a community legal practice setting and/or community-based organisation in remote and rural Australia.
Successful applicants will need to provide references, a recent WA Police Clearance, current Working with Children’s Check, and their working rights in Australia.
