Kurbingui Youth and Family Development have been awarded the Counselling, Intervention and Support Service (CISS) in Moreton Bay and Brisbane Regions.
This is a brand new exciting program aimed providing culturally safe, community-led holistic non-clinical therapeutic support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, their carers, and families. Using a whole-of-family approach, CISS strengthens connections to culture, community, and country, promoting cultural healing and wellbeing. The service focuses on children in Child Safety placements, especially those in non-family-based care, and employs a trauma-informed, culturally responsive model that prioritises the voices of children and young people. CISS also supports carers and families with strategies to enhance emotional wellbeing and relationships. Key outcomes include healing from trauma, fostering resilience, sustaining cultural connections, and empowering children and young people with the knowledge and skills for healthy, culturally strong adulthood.

About Kurbingui Youth & Family Development
Kurbingui Youth and Family Development (Kurbingui) is a not-for-profit Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation that offers services primarily to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, individuals, families, children, and young people living within the Greater Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Southeast Qld regions.
Kurbingui delivers various community services covering areas such as employment and training, family support, domestic and family violence response, alcohol and substance abuse, cultural education and engagement programs, support for families and children from preschool to tertiary education, recreation and sports, early years, families, children and youth supports, women's and men's programs, cultural group activities, Youth Justice and NDIS.
The Role
The primary purpose of the Case Worker at Kurbingui is to provide culturally appropriate and responsive support to individuals and families within the community. This role is crucial in ensuring that the Holistic Counselling Practitioners are supported in providing therapeutic interventions to vulnerable individuals and families in a way that respects and incorporates cultural values and strengths.
Key responsibilities include:
- Engagement: Support the Practitioners to contribute to the development and implementation of the case plan based on the needs and strengths of the family.
- Therapeutic Support: Provide non-clinical therapeutic holistic counselling to help clients address trauma and navigate challenges, offering emotional and psychological support.
- Connection: Support the strengthening and maintaining the cultural identity of children and young people by building on their strengths and protective factors to remain connected to their country, Elders, and community.
- Advocacy and Referral: Advocate for clients to access necessary services and resources, and assist in refer them to appropriate support services.
- Community Outreach: Engage with the community to promote available services and ensure accessibility for those in need, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of community resources and working collaboratively with other service providers to ensure the needs of families are met.
- Group Sessions and Workshops: Support the delivery of sessions focused on mental health, wellbeing, and family support.
- Collaboration: Work closely to support the administration team and other programs within Kurbingui, external service providers, and community organisations to ensure comprehensive client support.
- Support: Implement any other support tasks as allocated within the case plan and under the guidance of the Practitioners and Team Leaders.
- Confidentiality: Maintain confidentiality and provide effective service to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Work Flow: Develop effective work-flow strategies to ensure set goals and deadlines are met.
- Record Keeping: Assist the Practitioners in maintaining accurate and confidential client records and documentation.
- Professional Development: Participate in regular supervision and professional development sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.

To be successful in the role, you will (Key Selection Criteria):
- A developing and keen interest in professional therapeutic frameworks for working with children and young people, their families, extended families, community and other key stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work in authentic partnership with other professionals and organisations; including dialogue, negotiation and conflict management skills in critical decision-making processes.
- Demonstrated time management skills, with ability to balance and prioritise various client engagement, administrative and reporting requirements.
- An extensive understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, and protocols, along with the issues impacting them in contemporary society
- Demonstrated administration skills, including case note writing and data entry. Effective planning, organisation, and time management skills are also essential.
- Demonstrated problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a high-performing team.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Qualifications (or working towards) in the areas of Counselling, Social Work, Community Development, Social Sciences, Youth Work or similar.
- Cultural Competence: An extensive understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, and protocols, along with the issues impacting them in contemporary society.
- Communication Skills: Well developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, especially in relation to Indigenous young people, families, and communities.
- Professional Skills: An understanding of administration skills, including case note writing and data entry. Effective planning, organisation, and time management skills are also essential.
- Experience with Vulnerable Populations: Experience working with vulnerable individuals, families, children, and young people.
- Teamwork and Autonomy: Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team.
- Current Positive Blue Card.
- Current Drivers License with a clean driving history.
- Be willing to undergo a Criminal History check.
