Kurbingui Youth and Family Development have been awarded the Counselling, Intervention and Support Service (CISS) in Moreton Bay and Brisbane Regions. 

This is a brand new exciting program aimed providing culturally safe, community-led holistic non-clinical therapeutic support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, their carers, and families. Using a whole-of-family approach, CISS strengthens connections to culture, community, and country, promoting cultural healing and wellbeing. The service focuses on children in Child Safety placements, especially those in non-family-based care, and employs a trauma-informed, culturally responsive model that prioritises the voices of children and young people.

CISS also supports carers and families with strategies to enhance emotional wellbeing and relationships. Key outcomes include healing from trauma, fostering resilience, sustaining cultural connections, and empowering children and young people with the knowledge and skills for healthy, culturally strong adulthood.

About Kurbingui Youth & Family Development

Kurbingui Youth and Family Development (Kurbingui) is a not-for-profit Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation that offers services primarily to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, individuals, families, children, and young people living within the Greater Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Southeast Qld regions.

Kurbingui delivers various community services covering areas such as employment and training, family support, domestic and family violence response, alcohol and substance abuse, cultural education and engagement programs, support for families and children from preschool to tertiary education, recreation and sports, early years, families, children and youth supports, women's and men's programs, cultural group activities, Youth Justice and NDIS.

The Role

The primary purpose of the Counselling and Intervention Support Service (CISS) at Kurbingui is to provide culturally appropriate and responsive support to individuals and families within the community. This role is crucial in ensuring that vulnerable individuals and families receive the support they need in a way that respects and incorporates their cultural values and strengths. Key responsibilities include:

• Assessment and Engagement: Conduct thorough assessments to understand client needs and engage with them in a culturally sensitive manner.
• Therapeutic Support: Provide non-clinical therapeutic holistic counselling to help clients address trauma and navigate challenges, offering emotional and psychological support.
• Connection: Support the strengthening and maintaining the cultural identity of children and young people by building on their strengths and protective factors to remain connected to their country, Elders, and community. 
• Advocacy and Referral: Advocate for clients to access necessary services and resources, and refer them to appropriate support services.
• Community Outreach: Engage with the community to promote available services and ensure accessibility for those in need.
• Group Sessions and Workshops: Facilitate sessions focused on mental health, wellbeing, and family support.
• Collaboration: Work closely with other programs within Kurbingui, external service providers, and community organisations to ensure comprehensive client support.
• Client Assessments: Develop individualised support plans based on thorough assessments of client needs.
• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and confidential client records and documentation.
• Professional Development: Participate in regular supervision and professional development sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.

This role requires a deep commitment to cultural sensitivity, community engagement, and the delivery of trauma-informed support services.

To be successful in the role, you will (Key Selection Criteria):

• A well-developed professional therapeutic framework for working with children and young people, their families, extended families, community and other key stakeholders.
• Demonstrated knowledge of normal child development trajectories and the impact of child abuse and neglect, including sexual abuse, to children’s and young person’s functioning; including effective culturally safe individual and family intervention methods.
• Demonstrated ability to work in authentic partnership with other professionals and organisations; including dialogue, negotiation and conflict management skills in critical decision-making processes.
• Demonstrated experience in using critical strength based reflection, to enhance both practice skills and professional knowledge-base.
• Demonstrated ability to produce written case notes and reports that are clear and structured and evidence sound theoretical understandings, within a structured accountability framework, with strict confidentiality considerations.
• Demonstrated time management skills, with ability to balance and prioritise various client engagement, administrative and reporting requirements.
• Willing and able to work within a culturally safe context and Kurbingui Youth & Family Development’s mission, vision and values.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• Qualifications in the areas of Counselling, Social Work and/or Psychology, with a focus on child protection.
• Cultural Competence: An extensive understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, and protocols, along with the issues impacting them in contemporary society.
• Communication Skills: Highly developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, especially in relation to Indigenous youth, families, and communities.
• Professional Skills: Demonstrated administration skills, including case note writing and data entry.
• Effective planning, organisation, and time management skills are also essential.
• Current Positive Blue Card  
• Current Drivers License with a clean driving history
• Be willing to undergo a Criminal History check
