We deliver data analysis and support to individual organisations, but we also build and run multi-stakeholder data integration projects where 10-40 organisations combine data for sector-wide analysis. We are a mission-based organisation with a clear goal to improve the social sector and improve the lives of people.

We are looking for a data-capable consultant to join our team focusing on supporting social organisations to develop their measurement, evaluation and learning frameworks, and conduct data analysis on client datasets. Demonstrated experience and skills working and analysing data is essential - using Python, Excel, R and business intelligence software. Data science experience with running machine learning projects (e.g. to develop supervised or unsupervised predictive models) would be useful though not essential.

The position would suit someone with several years of experience developing outcomes measurement or metrics, doing deep analysis of varied datasets (e.g. client / customer, CRM, survey, service delivery, or health datasets etc.), and reporting and working with data. Experience working on social impact projects or in social service organisations also would be useful.

The position is initially on contract during a probation period, with hours per week negotiable, moving to permanent part time role based on agreement. Salary is commensurate with experience. Most work is done remotely with online meetings with clients, using cloud-based data tools. Laptop and software can be provided once moving to permanent position. Periodic face-to-face meetings with clients may be required for developing organisational requirements, workshopping on metrics frameworks (e.g. developing an outcomes framework for a social service client) - most clients are Melbourne-based but some are interstate.

The team is experienced, flexible and supportive and the projects are challenging, varied and rewarding. You will work with a project Director, our Senior Data Analyst and Data Engineer on relevant projects.

Responsibilities

  • Working with our data engineer, design the data pipeline (ETL process) and transformations for cleaning and integrating varied datasets from client databases (typically they are enrolment or intake demographic data, service and outcomes data, surveys and outputs from CRM databases)
  • Define the data ‘business requirements’ with social service clients to help them define the metrics and reporting requirements they have
  • Process and transform datasets in our virtual server environment, coding in SQL or Python for key data transformations eg cleaning, combining, pivoting and other transformations, (and work with our Data Engineer to provide business requirements for the data pipeline)
  • Develop analysis of datasets - using exploratory analytics, visualisations, statistical methods, segmentation, A|B testing and other techniques to find hidden trends, patterns, and relationships in the data that are useful and practical for clients
  • Develop dashboards and reports using Tableau or Power BI for presentation to clients
  • Develop insights from the data analysis that is practical and useful for social services clients and helps improve their operations and solve complex problems

Skills & competencies

  • A demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the key tools of data analysis (SQL, Python, Power BI, Tableau, Excel, data warehousing)
  • Ability to work with clients to scope and define data sets as needed for specific use cases and identify data gaps, assess data quality and manage data and privacy requirements.
  • Proficient at writing SQL queries and Python script for data analysis
  • Experience with data visualisation tools such as Power BI and Tableau for analysis and for live dashboarding
  • Degree and / or other relevant qualifications in data analysis, coding, statistics, mathematics or data science
  • Strong commitment to data privacy principles and alignment with the values of a social impact organisation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think creatively to find solutions to complex data challenges
  • Ability to learn new tools and technologies quickly and adapt to changing project requirements.
