Due to organisational growth and expansion Laurel Place is seeking a new Team Leader for the Gympie and Murgon offices. This position will provide leadership and supervision to counselling staff of Laurel Place Inc. who are engaged in providing services to people who have experienced sexual violence and their non–offending support persons. This position will report to the Director of Counselling Services and is required to lead the Gympie- and Murgon- based teams, consisting of both children’s and adult programs.

The successful applicant will be an integral member of the Laurel Place leadership team, with specific responsibilities for data collection and reporting, staff supervision, internal professional development, as well as annual performance reviews, recruitment and probation planning. The Team Leader will be responsible for developing and maintaining strategic and collaborative partnerships within the regions and engage in activities that raise awareness about the issues of sexual violence to build community capacity.

This position is subject to ongoing funding and successful completion of a 6-month probation period.

Organisational Environment

Laurel Place Inc. is funded by The Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services, and Child Safety, and is governed by a Board drawn from the local community. The service employs approximately 50 staff across four locations in Maroochydore, Gympie, Murgon as well as Moreton Bay.

The service provides a range of therapeutic support services to women, men, children, young people, families and the community that work towards reducing the impact and incidence of sexual, domestic and family violence.

Laurel Place also provides specialist education, training, information and resources to other professionals in the field.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the delivery of a range of therapeutic interventions to adults, young people and children who have experienced sexual violence, and their non-offending family members/carers.
  • Collaborate with the First Response team and engage in handover processes for clients accessing the service, as well as allocate new clients to counsellors, oversee caseloads and waiting lists.
  • Manage and prioritise program waitlists, navigating resource constraints and client needs through trauma-informed triaging and allocation strategies.
  • Oversee all service delivery activities of the respective teams including the timely provision of individual support, group programs and workshops, as required.
  • Provide case direction and both formal and informal supervision to counsellors and senior practitioners, ensuring best practice standards are being met, as well as adherence to organisational policy and procedures, and providing support to enhance staff wellbeing.
  • Maintain a small counselling caseload and work collaboratively with counselling staff around complex client presentations, as required.
  • Ensure the collection of statistical data by all staff is accurate and relevant and includes an analysis of key themes and trends.
  • Respond to requests for information including subpoenas and S159 (Child Safety) requests, as well as direct client requests, in line with relevant legislation and organisational policy and procedures.
  • Liaise with community and sector networks and develop appropriate collaborative partnerships with relevant services and agencies.
  • Provide leadership on the delivery of staff training, team building and professional development opportunities for Laurel Place Inc. staff.
  • Liaise with statutory bodies and other relevant services regarding case planning and monitor risk and safety concerns accordingly.
  • Ensure the maintenance of client confidentiality including retention of confidential client records by all team members.
  • Work with the broader leadership team to address issues relevant to all staff across the organisation and ensure consistency of practice.
  • Other reasonable duties within the scope of the position, as requested by Director, Counselling Services, Executive Director, and/or Board of Management.

All Service Staff Duties

  • Ensure client confidentiality and adherence to relevant privacy legislation.
  • Work within and towards the organisational vision, mission, and values, and contribute to a positive and supportive workplace culture and environment.
  • Deliver a trauma informed approach to practice and participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Work with other agencies regarding referral processes and client related services to ensure continuity of care and quality service provision.
  • Participate in annual and other planning sessions to develop a strategic response to sexual violence.
  • Support a culture of transparency and accountability within the service.

Primary Delegations and Accountabilities

  • Work under the broad direction of the Executive Director Laurel Place Inc and Board of Management, with direct reporting to the Director, Counselling Services.
  • Work as part of the leadership team (Board of Management, Executive Director, Director, Counselling Services, Project Lead: Clinical Governance, Manager Group Programs and Community Education, Team Leaders, Business Services Manager).
  • Work collaboratively with Support Worker – First Nations Clients to ensure culturally appropriate service delivery responses and resources.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications in psychology, social work or similar, and eligibility for full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a psychologist or membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers, or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation Australia.
  2. Demonstrated understanding of the gendered nature of sexual violence and its impact at both an individual and societal level.
  3. Demonstrated extensive experience providing direct intervention to women, men and children as well as non-offending supporters/carers who have been affected by sexual violence.
  4. Well-developed skills in delivering a trauma informed approach to co-ordinating intake, assessment and crisis interventions relevant to women, men and children who have been affected by sexual violence.
  5. Ability to lead and mentor a team of counsellors and ensure access to appropriate supervision and timely professional training and development.
  6. Demonstrated ability in time management, setting priorities and planning work effectively, and continuous improvement practices.
  7. Effective written and interpersonal communication skills, including an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  8. Proven ability in establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with government and non-government organisations, and positively represent the organisation in networking and community education activities.
