Law Access is a not-for-profit organisation that facilitates the giving of pro bono (free or low fee) legal assistance by the Western Australian legal profession to those who cannot afford a lawyer.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Triage Officer / Paralegal will be responsible for and supervise volunteers in:

• Answering general inquiries by providing information on eligibility, other legal assistance services and how to apply to Law Access.
• Reviewing applications to Law Access to ensure that all the necessary information has been provided by the applicant.
• Engaging with applicants and support services to obtain necessary information to allow applications to be assessed.
• Conducting an eligibility pre-screen to determine whether applicants to Law Access appear to be eligible for our service.
• Communicating with applicants and support services where the applicant does not satisfy our general eligibility criteria.
• Assisting with warm referrals to other legal assistance providers where appropriate.
• Referring potentially eligible applicants to Law Access legal staff for merit assessment and providing support where requested.
• May assist Law Access legal staff with preparation of briefs to lawyers or barristers, including document management.
• May assist in communicating with applicants and support services where Law Access legal staff decline an application.
• May assist in communication with applicants and support services where Law Access refers an applicant to pro bono legal assistance.

ABOUT YOU

The ideal applicant will have an appreciation of trauma-informed practice, excellent verbal communications skills, strong written language skills using plain English, an appreciation of social vulnerability factors and diversity, a strength-based mentality and respectful manner.

A background in psychology, counselling, social work, or other experience working with vulnerable people.

An understanding of the nature of the legal issues that vulnerable people face, the legal assistance sector, and relevant service providers.
