About the Law Council of Australia

The Law Council of Australia represents the legal profession at the national level, to speak on behalf of its Constituent Bodies on national issues, and to promote the administration of justice, access to justice and general improvement of the law.

The Law Council advises governments, courts and federal agencies on ways in which the law and the justice system can be improved for the benefit of the community. The Law Council also represents the Australian legal profession overseas, and maintains close relationships with legal professional bodies throughout the world.

The Law Council was established in 1933, and represents 16 Australian state and territory law societies and bar associations and the Law Firms Australia, which are known collectively as the Council’s Constituent Bodies.

The Secretariat serves the Law Council nationally and is based in Canberra.

About the Section

The International Law Section (ILS) is an expert group of the Law council and provides a focal point for lawyers and others interested in transnational and international law matters, trade and business practice, migration, and human rights issues. Lawyers and others are able to discuss current issues and contribute to the development of international legal practice and policy. The ILS runs a series of workshops, seminars and practice courses for its members and legal practitioners in Australia and overseas. The Section’s Chapters provide an opportunity for Australian trained lawyers based overseas to meet, network and filter back issues of concern.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Section Coordinator to join our dynamic team. If you are a self-starter with a passion for stakeholder engagement and thrive in fast-paced environments, we want to hear from you.

The Section Coordinator reports to the Law Council’s Executive Officer/Company Secretary.

Duties and Responsibilities

As the Section Coordinator, you will:

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and management of the activities of the ILS in consultation with the Executive Committee of the ILS and the Executive Officer and Company Secretary.
  • Provide executive support to the Chair and the Executive Committee of the ILS.
  • Organise ILS Committee meetings, including the distribution of agendas and minutes, organisation of venues, travel and catering, attending to follow-up action and taking minutes for Executive meetings.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of innovative strategies and materials to engage with Committee and ILS members, including seeking contributions to submissions.
  • Engage with ILS members and manage and promote membership of the ILS utilising the Bond database, contribute to the overall membership growth plan: including general promotional activities, managing renewal drives and identifying and promoting member benefits.
  • Coordinate key seminars, lecture series and events delivered by the ILS.
  • Work in close liaison with the Chair and Executive Officer and Company Secretary to ensure diligent and resourceful use of the ILS expenditure and budget.
  • Assist with the preparation of ILS Section quarterly reports for Law Council Directors’ meetings.
  • In collaboration with the Law Council’s Communications Team, maintain and regularly update the ILS webpage and social media accounts.
  • Attend quarterly ILS Executive meetings.

About You

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience in providing executive and high-level administrative support.
  • Exceptional organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Ability to provide a high standard of administrative support with an emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail with well-developed writing skills.
  • Self-motivated and the ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated high standard of competency in MS Office.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with the ability to multi-task, manage conflicting priorities and meet deadlines whilst dealing with a wide range of people.
  • The ability to travel to Sydney (day-tips), approximately four times a year.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with administrative tools (e.g., Zoom, document management systems).

Desirable:

  • An interest or past experience in transnational and International law.
  • Experience in providing meeting support, including minute taking.
  • Experience working with data management systems, design software and registration systems.
  • Previous experience in a member-based organisation, or legal background.
  • Some experience with finance.
  • Experience liaising with key stakeholders, for example: legal professionals, courts, government agencies, academia, members, external providers, and contractors.
