About us

Legal Aid NSW helps people with their legal problems. We can help people with most areas criminal law, family law and every day civil law legal issues. We give legal advice, help at court and do family dispute resolution. We can do this over the telephone or at one of our 28 offices.

With You Training Project

The With You project is a training package for trauma-informed, rights-based legal services to people experiencing distress, poor mental health or suicidality. With You has designed training and an organisational toolkit in partnership with people receiving and delivering legal assistance services. It is the first national co-design project in the legal assistance sector.

Legal Aid NSW was granted Commonwealth funding, on behalf of National Legal Aid, to deliver trauma-informed, rights-based for the legal assistance sector. For more information, see https://www.nationallegalaid.org/withyou/.

Training will be freely available to Community Legal Centres, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services, Family Violence Prevention Legal Services and Legal Aid Commissions. 

About the role

The Training Project Officer will deliver training nationally to lawyers, allied professionals and legal support staff in civil, crime and family law jurisdictions. 

This role is an opportunity to contribute to systems change. You can help people experiencing distress, mental ill-health or suicidality receive trauma-informed, rights-based legal services across the country.

This is a part-time role, up to 21 hours per week, for a period up to 12 months. The successful applicant can negotiate to work at less than 21 hours per week.

About you 

You will draw from your trauma-informed legal practice to deliver training to the legal assistance sector on how to work with clients experiencing distress, poor mental health or suicidality in a trauma-informed, rights-based manner.

We may use this recruitment to create a talent pool for similar ongoing or temporary vacancies we have over the next 18 months.

The essential requirements for this role

You must:

  • Be willing to do a Criminal Record Check and/or Working with Children Check
  • Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency (for ongoing vacancies) or a valid visa to work in Australia (for temporary vacancies) have recent legal practice experience with clients experiencing distress, mental ill-health or suicidality
  • Have demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Have experience applying a trauma-informed, rights-based approach to legal practice. 

Key knowledge and experience

  • Demonstrated commitment to mental health recovery, and social and emotional wellbeing philosophy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of adult learning principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in development and review of training materials for face-to-face and online training.
  • Experience with Articulate 360 and eLearning software.
  • Willingness and ability to travel interstate.
