About Us:

The LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation (DVAF) is a charity comprised of a collective of passionate volunteers, desperate to shine a light on an epidemic that’s been plaguing LGBTQ+ communities for far too long.

Our core objectives are:

  • Helping end domestic, family and intimate partner violence and abuse (DFV) within LGBTQ communities, by increasing visibility through an annual awareness campaign.
  • Advocating for and supporting the empowerment of LGBTQ victims and survivors of DFV.
  • Collaborating with other organisations to help reduce barriers to reporting violence, accessing support services and creating safe and inclusive experiences for LGBTQ victims and survivors of DFV.
  • Providing targeted information and education resources, such as our See, Hear, Believe online learning platform, to equip workplaces, educational institutions and the broader community with the knowledge to effectively respond to DFV in LGBTQ+ communities.

About you:

As a volunteer (non-remunerated) State Coordinator you will play a vital role in driving awareness of our Foundation and its work within your local State and/or Territory, and help ensure localised experience and perspectives are part of our national voice.

This is a hands-on, grass-roots, community coordination role for identified members of the LGBTQIA+ community, which requires a commitment of time (approx. 4-6 hours per month), positivity, communication and relationships.

To help know whether this will compliment your primary day-job/family commitments, a State Coordinator would be expected to:

  • Attend monthly meetings and provide a brief overview of localised activities. This may increase in March-May each year due to Mardi Gras, DFV Prevention Month and our annual awareness day campaign(s).
  • Participate in out-of-session discussions through email.
  • Coordinate and participate in our involvement in local LGBTQ+ and other applicable events to assist in driving awareness.
  • Be prepared to speak on behalf of the Foundation (training and support provided where appropriate).
  • Ideally you would be able to commit to a term of 3 years.

While experience in a similar role is not required, essential pre-requisites are a willingness to undertake a national police check, proficiency in the use of basic technologies (email, virtual meeting systems etc) and an understanding of community organising (or a desire to learn).
