ORGANISATION BACKGROUND

  • Position location: 2 Gap Road, Alice Springs
  • Responsible to: Ranger Coordinator / Team Leader
  • Commencement: February 2025
  • Term: 6-months (subject to funding and project extension)
  • Working Days: 4-days per week (Mon-Thu)

Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation (LAAC) is the registered native title body corporate under the Native Title Act for the Mparntwe, Irlpme, and Antulye clan groups as Traditional Owners of Alice Springs, following a court determination ruling and registered incorporated body in 2002.

Lhere Artepe is increasing service delivery across Alice Springs which includes expansion into the Ranger and Caring for Country programmes. Looking after Country; including Todd River, Telegraph Station, Anzac Hill, and other cultural sites. This position directly relates to the operation of program delivery.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Lhere Artepe Rangers are funded through a blend of grants and fee-for-service activities. Rangers provide effective and culturally appropriate land management within the town boundaries of Alice Springs in collaboration with Traditional Owners, leaseholders, government authorities, community organisations, agencies and non- government organisations, in accordance with the aims and objectives of the Indigenous Land and Sea Rangers Program and aligning with the LAAC Ranger Prospectus 2022-2027. With the aim to conserve and repair areas that both visitors and residents can value. Including cultural heritage sites, recording of traditional knowledge and preserve the natural environment in a town environment.

THE ROLE

Working within a small team the Rangers have an important role to care for Lhere Artepe country while using traditional and modern environmental management practices, gaining formal qualifications and experiences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out on-ground environmental and cultural management activities that are relevant to the Ranger program in accordance with the management and/or supervisory staff

  • Perform daily tasks efficiently and document progress for reporting purposes
  • Ability and willingness to undertake physical labor, outdoors and in varying conditions, as well as handle a variety of plant and animal species, chemicals, illegal waste, and the like, within workplace health and safety policies and procedures
  • Strong interest in resource management. With the ability to participate and complete accredited training in conservation and land management or relevant courses.
  • Good communication skills
  • Current valid driver’s license; or ability to obtain
  • A Working with Children (Ochre Card) & National Police Check; or ability to obtain
  • Display an understanding of cultural protocols, together with traditional and external clients and work respectfully in accordance with the Indigenous culture
  • Ability to maintain a neat appearance, good health, and in a multigender team
  • Actively promote safe working practices across all activities both on-site, in the office, and training facilities.

OTHER DUTIES

Other duties that are safe, legal & logical while being within the limits of the employee’s skill, competence and training, and are consistent with the classification structure.

DESIRABLE

  • Technical or trade skills relevant to Ranger program activities such as: Construction, Fire and Weed Management, GIS, Sacred Site Clearance, Plant and Animal Identification, Small Engine Maintenance, 4WD Operating, and Quad Bike Handling
  • Computer and Written skills
  • Certificate II or higher in Conservation and Land Management
