Ecosystem Protection Project Officer

Live & Learn Environmental Education

JOIN A TEAM THAT IS SUPPORTING ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IN THE PACIFIC.

At Live & Learn Environmental Education, we work directly with communities in countries across Asia and the Pacific to help build community resilience to the impacts of climate change, protect ecosystems, and strengthen the connection between people and the places they live.

Our vision is for a sustainable and equitable world free from poverty. Local ownership of environmental and development programs, open participation and equality are the foundations of Live & Learn. We always work with communities to design, implement and learn from community-based development projects specific to each location.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT:

Our Ecosystem protection projects work with local landowners and governments to develop community-led carbon finance projects as an alternative to logging in the Pacific. Their aim is to protect the land rights of traditional forest stewards and provide them with revenue to continue their protection efforts and fund community development initiatives. They are developed in partnership with The Nakau Programme, a for-purpose social enterprise that supports Pacific communities in developing "High Integrity Carbon Projects". At the centre of these projects are a rigorous approach to environmental benefits analysis and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). Projects are currently being developed and implemented in Vanuatu and Solomon Islands, under funding from the Australian, United-States and New-Zealand governments.

You are comfortable working in the context of rapid change and can adapt to emerging challenges of program implementation.
  • Your communication skills and experience with digital tools allow you to work with others even though they may not be in the same office as you.
  • You have experience working in the development sector and implementation of projects in the Pacific and, ideally, are familiar with the cultural contexts of Pasifika communities.
  • You understand principles of community development practice, and you demonstrate an understanding of climate change resilience and ecosystem protection.
