Position Overview
The Health Promotion Officer is part of the HIV and Client Services team. The Officer is responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating a range of health promotion activities, including coordinating event activations, and disseminating HIV and sexual health messaging within the community. The Officer will also contribute to health activities and initiatives targeted toward communities that Meridian champions, including LGBTIQA+ communities, sex workers, and people living with and impacted by HIV.
Position Responsibilities
Under direction of the Manager of Health Promotion,
- Campaign Development: Create and deliver innovative sexual health and HIV promotion campaigns and materials, including social media, with a sex-positive focus.
- Community Engagement: Organise and participate in community health promotion events including stalls and activation campaigns to raise awareness of HIV, sexual health, LGBTIQA+ support, and Meridian’s services.
- Communication: Provide tailored Health Promotion information to the LGBTIQA+ communities, various stakeholders and other communities of interest through communication methods including newsletters, social media and print resources.
- Collaboration: Be able to identify and collaborate with stakeholders (staff, community members, partner organisations, government) to enhance impact and outreach.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of activities for reporting and accountability, including evaluation outcomes
- Team Collaboration: Work with team members on joint projects and initiatives as needed.
- Additional Tasks: Perform other duties as assigned, based on skills and experience.
- Policy Adherence: Follow Meridian’s organisational policies and procedures.
Qualifications, Key Attributes and Skills
Essential
- Proven Expertise in Health Promotion: Demonstrated skills and experience in health promotion and/or community development and engagement, showcasing a strong background in these areas.
- In-Depth Knowledge of Public Health Issues: Solid understanding of HIV, blood-borne viruses, sexually transmitted infections, and the unique lived experiences of LGBTIQA+ communities.
- Visual and Digital Communication Skills: Experience in developing visually appealing and informative content for health promotion purposes, using Canva or other digital design tools. Ability to transform health data and messages into engaging graphics that resonate with diverse audiences.
- Commitment to Community Support: A strong understanding of and commitment to supporting the diverse communities served by Meridian, ensuring their needs are prioritised.
- Exceptional Communication Skills: Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively present to and engage large groups, fostering community involvement.
- Independence and Team Collaboration: Ability to take direction while also working independently within professional boundaries, contributing positively to the team's success.
- Effective Networking and Partnership Building: Proven capacity to network and establish partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders, enhancing collaboration and resource sharing.
- Strong Organisational Abilities: Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple competing demands effectively.
- Unrestricted Australian Driver’s License and an ACT Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) Registration
Desirable
- Qualifications, or at least two years of experience, in Health Promotion, Population Health, Community Development, or a relevant discipline.
- A deep understanding of the diverse identities, experiences, and needs of the LGBTIQA+ community.
