Interested in criminology or psychology or simply looking for a position that supports genuine and positive social change?

If you are open to a permanent government position with job variety, shift work, attractive pay, flexibility and training and development opportunities … maybe it’s time to join our new team?

Background

Contribute to community safety and be part of a newly formed, dynamic team within Queensland Corrective Services’ (QCS) High Risk Offender Management Unit (HROMU) based at Wacol. This unit is responsible for the management of offenders that have completed their sentence and are residing in temporary contingency accommodation. These high risk offenders (residents) are subject to a supervision order connected to the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003.

The Role

The Accommodation Services Officer is an interesting and highly diverse role. Responsibilities range from supervising and monitoring residents as per their compliance orders to supporting everyday living skills development including teaching household duties, to achieve eventual re-integration into successful community living.

Working within a supportive and closely knit team, you will be fully trained to interact with residents in a safe and secure way. The residents often present with highly complex needs, so your role is to build relationships, maintaining professional boundaries at all times, attending to any accommodation requirements and delivering practical skill workshops, based on individual case management plans. You will also liaise and interact with a wide range of stakeholders such as community agencies and service providers who are approved to engage with the residents, ensuring all policies, procedures and security measures are followed. Other duties include surveillance activities, random substance testing, and escorting residents into the community for appointments and the completion of timely case notes and reports.

Ideal background

We are seeking team diversity. While applicants from a criminal justice, human services or regulatory agency background remain highly desirable, we also encourage people to apply outside of these fields. This could include people from trade backgrounds, retail or hospitality, who can demonstrate, in their resume and cover letter, how their knowledge, skills and experiences can support a successful transition into the ASO role.

Critical skills

To be part of our success story, you will need to have the following skills:

  • Confident, clear and articulate verbal and written communication, tailoring conversations to suit a range of audiences with the ability to write succinct and accurate reports.
  • Sound stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills, committed to achieve positive outcomes by developing rapport and engaging respectfully with others.
  • Problem solving and conflict management, gathering and assessing information to make appropriate, informed decisions, using sound judgement to assess and manage potential conflict situations.
  • Governance, the ability to interpret relevant legislation, policies and procedures, ensuring compliance matters are upheld.
  • Computer skills, experienced in using MS Office including word, email, internet with the ability to use other customised systems.
  • Resilience, empathy and cultural awareness, perseveres and bounces back from setbacks, evidences compassion and understanding when engaging with others and has a respectful appreciation of cultural differences.
