Job Description

The Keeping Families Together: A Supporting Housing Initiative aims to provide long-term, affordable, and safe housing for vulnerable families in Brisbane, with the objective of diverting at-risk families from involvement with Queensland’s child protection system. This program delivers a supportive housing response model, combining a property and tenancy management component and a multidisciplinary support component and is delivered to 20 families throughout Brisbane.

As a Family Support and Advocacy Workers you will work as part of the Keeping Families Together team providing a coordinated approach to sustaining tenancy and family stability. This is achieved through building greater awareness and understanding of the developmental and health needs of children who are tenants of the supportive housing program, using an adaptation of the Parents as Teachers (PAT) approach.

This is a permanent full-time employment opportunity with conditions and salary at Level 4/5 depending upon experience of the SCHADS Award.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct structured home visits and group connection opportunities focused on parent-child interaction, development-centred parenting, and family wellbeing.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders, including Common Ground Queensland, Child Safety, Department of Housing, and health services.
  • Maintain high-quality case notes and support plans using our service record system.
  • Promote a culture of respect, safety, and trauma-informed approaches within the team.
  • Participate in supervision and professional development activities.

Essential Criteria

  • Relevant Human Services diploma or tertiary qualification and extensive experience, or a combination of experience, expertise, and competence.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with young children and parents, with an understanding of issues faced by vulnerable families.
  • Demonstrated understanding of child protection issues and ability to assess risk using a strengths-based approach.
  • Experience in delivering parenting support and knowledge of early childhood development.
  • Commitment to social justice and the values of Micah Projects.
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to advocate effectively.
  • Proficiency in the Parents as Teachers framework or willingness to become accredited.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
