About the role

We are seeking a resilient, compassionate Community Mental Health Practitioner - Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander for a permanent, part-time (30.4 hours/week) opportunity to join our new service in Gubbi Gubbi country. In this role, you will deliver personalised support and recovery-oriented care through one-on-one support, shared supports, workshops, and group facilitation, empowering young Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples facing mental health challenges to achieve their recovery goals, develop life skills, and strengthen connections with local communities and kindship groups.

This position is exclusively open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. The role requires flexibility to work within a 24/7 rotating roster, including night shifts, weekends, and sleepovers.

About the service

This new service is designed to support young people aged 16 to 21 as they transition from an acute mental health setting to community living or to prevent further hospital admissions. In a homelike environment with 24-hour access to staff, young people are supported to achieve their recovery goals, strengthen relationships with families and carers, develop social connections, and build capacity to live safely in the community.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver high quality services and facilitate positive educational and social experiences.
• Support young people to return to a community of their choosing, live independently and enjoy a positive future through a staged approach to recovery.
• Plan and deliver group programs that help young people to develop life skills and focus on recovery.
• Support clients in building or re-establishing connections with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and services.          
• Collaborate with a range of services and the community to ensure a co-ordinated, integrated response to the client’s recovery goals.

What you’ll bring

• Applicant must identify as an Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander.
• Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Youth Work, Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, or other health-related field.
• Hold a current First Aid and CPR certificate and perform these duties as required as part of the role.
• Expertise supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with mental health issues, homelessness, complex needs and interacting with families and carers.
• Proven ability to build meaningful connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, supporting cultural reconnection and engagement with kinship groups, elders, and Country.
• Able to provide a record of Vaccination Preventable Diseases or able to obtain vaccinations against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken Pox, Whooping Cough, Hepatitis B or other diseases as required by our Partnership with QLD Health.
