About the role

We are seeking a resilient and compassionate Community Mental Health Practitioner for a fixed-term, part-time opportunity (30.4 hours per week), with potential for extension. Working as part of a caring team on a 24/7 rotating roster in the Cairns area, you will provide person-centred, recovery-oriented support to help clients develop daily living skills, build community connections, and achieve their wellbeing goals for independent living.

About the service

The Community Care Unit (CCU) is a residential service providing intensive treatment and recovery support to help people experiencing serious mental health issues whose lives have been disrupted making living independently difficult. Clients have 24/7 access to staff and are supported to stabilise their mental health, define recovery goals, build daily living skills, strengthen relationships, develop social connections, and increase their capacity to live independently. The CCU service offers personalised one-to-one support, shared support, workshops, and group activities aligned with each client’s individual recovery plan.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver high quality services and facilitate positive educational and social experiences.
  • Support clients to return to their community, live independently and enjoy a meaningful life through a staged approach to recovery.
  • Provide information and mentoring to clients to establish relationships with families and carers, create community networks and access to relevant services.
  • Plan and deliver group programs that aid clients to build their skills and focus on recovery.
  • Collaborate with a range of services and the community to ensure a co-ordinated, integrated response to client’s recovery goals.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health-related field.
  • Expertise in working with people with mental health issues, complex needs and interacting with families and carers.
  • Proven capability to implement therapeutic, recovery oriented frameworks and practices including risk mitigation, trauma informed care and family inclusive practice.
  • Able to provide a record of Vaccination Preventable Diseases or able to obtain vaccinations against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken Pox, Whooping Cough, Hepatitis B or other diseases as required by our Partnership with QLD Health.
