About the role

headspace in partnership with Mind aims to promote and facilitate improvements in the mental health, social wellbeing and economic participation of young people aged 12-25 years residing the Northern Region of Melbourne. Services in this youth friendly space are delivered across four core streams - physical and sexual health, mental health, alcohol and other drugs (AOD), and educational and vocational services to improve access for young people to mental health programs as well as ensuring better co-ordination between service providers

We are seeking a motivated and proactive Lead Intake and Assessment professional for a full-time maternity leave position until 24 December 2025, based in Box Hill. In this role, you will engage with young people aged 12-25, providing intake, screening, assessment, referral, brief interventions, and coordinated care for those who self-refer or are referred to headspace Box Hill.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive strengths-based intake screening and assessment of need with young people to identify and respond to the presenting issues and concerns.
  • Undertake thorough and effective risk assessment of young people.
  • Purposefully engage with young people and their families using evidence-based counselling principles, practices and techniques.
  • Support family, friends, and carer roles through understanding their concerns and the provision of information, education, and referrals.
  • Make linkages and build relationships and referral pathways to maintain or create a range of local supports for young people. 

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary degree qualifications in Allied Health (Occupational Therapy, Social Worker, Psychology or Psychiatric Nursing) or other health-related field.
  • Demonstrated skills in working with young people and/or adults and families with mental health and/or contextual challenges including family violence, poverty, homelessness, drug and alcohol, protective issues.
  • Experience undertaking intake and screening activities, including comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment to determine client needs, and to assist clients to access appropriate services.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, including suicide, self-harm, AOD use and violence risk, and develop action plans to mitigate these risks.
  • Capacity to collaborate with the Clinical Lead and Service Manager to develop an understanding of the community services sector and ability to build strong relationships with service providers, agencies, and key stakeholders.
  • Mandarin, Cantonese and/or other Asian language skills are highly regarded.
