About the role

We are seeking self-motivated, empathic Peer Practitioners for casual opportunities to work alongside a caring team in the St. James area. You will use your lived/living experience of mental health challenges to provide intensive, person-centred, recovery-oriented support to clients, helping them achieve their wellbeing goals, build capacity and daily living skills, strengthen social connections, enhance community networks, and grow confidence to live independently. 

About the service

The Saint James Transitional Care Unit (TCU) residential service, delivered in partnership with East Metro Health Service network, supports clients aged between 18-64 years up to 6 months to transition from a hospital setting back into the community or to prevent admissions whilst residing in the community. TCU offers recovery-focused, person-centred supports delivered by specialised mental health clinicians and peer workers a shift from treating symptoms to coaching people to develop a life with meaning and purpose. Clients are supported to achieve their recovery goals, build life skills, develop links with support networks, strengthen relationships with families and carers, participate in work or education, and grow capacity to live independently.

Key responsibilities

  • Draw on the broader Lived Experience knowledge base to inform your practice.
  • Support people to return to their community, live independently and pursue a meaningful life using the Intentional Peer Support approach.
  • Deliver high-quality services to respond to the unique needs of the service users, offering a flexible and person-centred approach.
  • Provide resources and support to service users to foster positive relationships with those important to them, create community networks and access to relevant services.
  • Plan and deliver group programs that develop skills and focus on recovery goals.
  • Collaborate with a range of services and the community to ensure a co-ordinated, integrated response to the client’s recovery goals. 

What you’ll bring

  • Completion of Intentional Peer Support Core and/ or Advanced Training, or Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, is desirable but not required.
  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) are required in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) or other health related field as designated by Mind.
  • Previous experience in using lived experience and Expertise in a dedicated Peer role strongly desirable.
  • Experience, expertise and/or desire to work directly with people with mental health issues, as well as their families and carers.
  • Experience or ability to acquire skills in understanding needs and working collaboratively to plan wellbeing supports using evidence informed approaches and tools.
