About the role

headspace in partnership with Mind Australia aims to promote and facilitate improvements in the mental health, social wellbeing and economic participation of young people aged 12-25 years residing the Eastern Region of Melbourne. Services in this youth friendly space are delivered across four core streams - physical and sexual health, mental health, alcohol and other drugs (AOD), and educational and vocational services to improve access for young people to mental health programs as well as ensuring better co-ordination between service providers.

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Senior Counsellor for a Fixed Term Full Time opportunity until December 2025 opportunity in Box Hill. You will be part of the leadership team to and model excellent practice in providing services to young people, families, friends and carers with a strength-based recovery approach.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to young people, their families and friends especially those of a complex and high-risk nature by purposefully engaging with them using strength-based, recovery-orientated practices.
  • Support family, friends and carer roles through understanding their concerns and the provision of information, education and referrals.
  • Plan and develop group work programs with the Clinical Team Leader that will assist young people and potentially their families to build their skills, and social connections and focus on their recovery.
  • Maintain accurate and timely Client File Information and records in approved database systems and assist other staff to do so.
  • Collaborate with a range of services and the community to ensure a coordinated, integrated response to the client’s recovery goals.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to provide integrated care
  • Encourage feedback and contributions to service delivery improvements.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mental Health, Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Youth Work or other related fields as designated by Mind Australia.
  • Expertise in working with young people with mental health issues, and complex needs and interacting with families and carers.
  • Proven capability to implement therapeutic, recovery-oriented frameworks and practices including risk mitigation, trauma-informed care and family-inclusive practice.
  • Ability to deliver person-centred support coordination services in line with client’s defined goals and aspirations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Community Services sector and ability to build strong relationships with service providers, clinical teams and key stakeholders.
  • High-level organisational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritise, manage multiple complex tasks concurrently, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated understanding of child safety standard principles
  • Mandarin and Cantonese proficiency highly regarded.
