Your opportunity

Are you passionate about bringing hope, compassion, and practical support to individuals and communities?
Mission Australia is seeking a dedicated Community Chaplain to work 21 hours per week, based in Whyalla. As the Community Chaplain you will engage with local churches, Christian organisations and other faith groups and community organisations to promote holistic wellbeing for all community members with a focus on Mission Australia clients and community goals.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Be available to listen to community members who have a need to talk about personal issues and circumstances
  • Provide pastoral care, information and support to community members empowering them to explore future goals, grow and confront personal challenges
  • Support MA staff in interactions with community members and engage with community members with whom MA and other services have difficulty connecting
  • Connect and build relationships with local churches, Christian organisations and other groups to promote opportunities to offer support for MA clients / tenants and promote the services of local churches and other groups on request
  • Participate in local church and community events, activities and celebrations and contribute to church and community group communications
  • Facilitate the engagement of church and Christian organisation programs (and members) with community groups and personal development opportunities (e.g. COACH, CAP, volunteering, community leadership programs, sports, arts)
  • Provide services with a spiritual and / or religious content including facilitating discussion groups where requested by community members, in consultation with local church and community groups and the local senior leadership of Mission Australia
  • Create and update participant contact data in line with Mission Australia protocols
  • Complete a range of other administrative duties for the efficient running of the service including statistics, reports, referral letters, goals plans etc.

Requirements for success

  • A demonstrated knowledge of the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations
  • A Degree/Diploma in Chaplaincy/CPE/Ministry or a minimum of five years' experience in a similar role in a Christian Church or Community Sector
  • A comprehensive understanding of the issues and needs of the program target group, of working with churches and of spreading the knowledge of God's love with sensitivity
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross denominationally and cross culturally while maintaining the Bible as the inspired word of God
  • Demonstrated ability to develop stakeholder relationships towards program outcomes
  • Computer literacy in a MS Office/Windows/Outlook environment
  • Strong written, verbal and digital communication skills
  • Hold a current valid Drivers License and Working with Children Check

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
